This was a great general history of the peopling and population dynamics of New Mexico. It does give entertaining anecdotes, but they're nicely framed in their historical context so that they come across as relevant to the story being told. Having grown up in New Mexico, I felt like this book provided information relevant to most of the major historical events that are referred to both in textbooks and in everyday conversation. One thing that surprised me was the amount of violent death that occurred in the various chapters of New Mexico's history. I had no idea that there were so many murders and losses of life during the changes of power that occurred from the 16th all the way up to the 20th century.

I enrolled in ENMU’s History of New Mexico course because history has always interested me and I felt I should know more about my new home state. New Mexico by Roberts and Roberts is the course text and gives an overview of the state’s history in less than 200 pages. Ruidoso Public Library has an older edition and upon examination, the new edition has rearranged some chapters since statehood and added some more recent events. Otherwise, it is virtually the same book. Ruidoso Public Library has a great Southwest Collection including New Mexico History that each of those authors, historians, researchers felt they had something important to say, but having read practically nothing to date about New Mexico, I am happy to start with a survey or overview in one volume before deciding if I want to tackle the hundreds of books in our library.

I teach New Mexico History and there are definitely better books out there. The description says that it takes readers to the opening of the 21st century. This was last revised in 1988 so it's a bit off from the 21st century, which we're in now. There are definitely more concise books out there on the history of the state, especially within the last year since we celebrated 100 years as a state in 2012.
