Great information and beautiful pictures! I would have preferred larger print.... even if it meant breaking the book down into several editions.

This is an older book I found in the free library in my clubhouse. The information is not current but it was still helpful for the maps and train routes. I'm only spending two days in the south of France after a trip to morocco so this older edition was sufficient for my purposes.

Read this book as preparation for a holiday in France. Really helpful in deciding where to go and what to see. A book I will refer to again and again.

DK Eyewittness is a much more straightforward type of book and makes no attempt to prioritize the best or must-see sights. The book did divide the country up into several regions with each regional section giving a brief summary of the history, food, and top-sites that were particular to that region, but the majority of the book’s focus was on Paris with a total of 110 pages of the 670 page book dedicated to the capital city. The book does include several helpful two-page sections with detailed “maps” highlighting many of the city centers, but it is obvious that these maps are really bird’s-eye drawings best used for general reference and not very helpful for navigating when on the ground.

I planned a trip to France with this book. It is filled with pictures and maps of everything a visitor could do divided by areas in France. In the back of the book are sections devoted to where to stay, where to eat, shopping, as well as a practical guide for the foreigner. Everything includes descriptions and cost as well as many other tidbits important for traveling. For example, each place to stay has how many rooms are available to rent. This gives you a better idea of how big or intimate a I planned a trip to France with this book. It is filled with pictures and maps of everything a visitor could do divided by areas in France. I bought this book before I took my trip to france, I used it to plan my trip as I had done previously with my trip to Japan. Unfortunately, I forgot to pack the book and travel itinerary. I would have had to wing it if it weren't for the fact that I found a copy of the Eyewitness Travel Paris in one of the airports. So of course, the trip was not as structured as I would have liked, but at least I knew what I wanted to see in Paris.

Because this book is trying to cover so much ground in so few pages it doesn't really cover anything in particularly great detail. If you can get something more region specific (I can't because we holiday in a location in between areas, so no guide quite covers 'us' correctly) I'd recommend that instead.

I love the DK guide books. My only complaint is that there are never recommendations. The books have amazing maps, guided walks and drawings. However, when you tackle a new coutry, sometimes it would be really good to have some advice.

I like the eyewitness series and this one didn't disappoint. It's useful when you've never been somewhere to have some pictures; helps you decide what you want to see and what you think you can afford to skip.

I found this book handy on my trip to France a couple of years ago. I found it equally valuable when recently reading Willa Cather's One of Our Own, a wonderful read too.
