When I requested this book, I expected fabulous and seldom seen pictures of the White House. I didn't expect to learn so much of the history attached to those pictures. This is one of the few books I have brought home that my husband wanted to read as well.

I originally picked up this book because I was looking for a book on the history of the White House from a design/construction aspect and it had the best ratings on Amazon. However, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it is more "History through Photographs" than "Photographs and History". The book covers the history of photography & media and how the folks at the White House adapted along with it. Fascinating and informative book that explores the history of the White House and its inhabitants, much of it through archived photography, both formal and informal in tone. There was a good deal of material I hadn't known personally before, and I found the choices of photographs, divided into chapters by themes, to be ideal. Some of them convey the character of the people; others are carefully set to give a dramatic look.
