Red, white, and blue headings highlight the brief text accompanying each colorful double-paged spread. Eye-catching photographs show members of each branch of the armed forces interacting with civilians in a variety of positive settings: on parade floats, marching, in ceremonies, and in classrooms. President Obama is depicted giving speeches and honoring war veterans. Overall this provides a good springboard to introduce the patriotic holiday. It identifies the five parts of America’s military. The text provides an explanation of why and how people celebrate the holiday. A simple Veterans Day craft is included. An index, book list, and suggested web sites round out the slim volume. The book has only a few minor flaws. The five-word glossary, while highlighting key terms (”Armed Forces,” “holiday,” “military,” “patriotic,” and “veteran”), is inconsistent if providing a pronunciation key (two terms do not have these), and the pronunciation keys do not follow standard (dictionary-style) format. Also, women in the armed forces are barely represented.

Interesting. The book begins with the glossary. The facts are simple, but clear. The real life photos are a beneficial addition to show emotion in the text. Includes age-appropriate activity at the end.
