This book is the best of French's novels so far. I highly recommend listening to audiobook, the narrator's Irish accent adds so much. French does an amazing job with dialogue. Frank Mackey is entirely believable and so likeable. Loving this book. This book is the best of French's novels so far. I loved the book after only a few pages and this novel did not disappoint me. The descriptive parts were beautifully written and the dialogues so strong they elevate this book to a very high echelon. No cardboard personages and the neighborhood where the story develops is so well drawn with strong words you only have to close your eyes to be there and feel the smell, the desolation and despair. I loved the ending too. Not far-fetched, almost bland even, and with a mix of memories that grab you by I loved the book after only a few pages and this novel did not disappoint me. I loved the ending too. Not far-fetched, almost bland even, and with a mix of memories that grab you by the throat. In fact the whole novel is more about the past and memories and a lot of what ifs. It is not a hardboiled thriller nor some ingenious mystery but more a dramatic evocation of how someone’s life can be turned around and how one can live for decades dreaming the wrong dreams. Fascinating and highly recommended.

I'm usually rubbish at solving the mystery, so the fact that I did so early on suggests this book isn't isn't topnotch as puzzles go. But as a portrait of a dysfunctional family it's good, particularly two of the characters who are presented in some complexity. Coming from a dysfunctional family myself, appreciated the tensions that can both pull a family apart and hold it together. I loved this audible book. The accent of the narrator added to the atmosphere of the story. The characters are well developed and the view of the interactions of the family members is a well written saga. I highly recommend this story. It has everything family, mystery, love and loss - a beautiful, complex story.

This book has family drama, murder, and intrigue. Plus, it’s beautifully written and who doesn’t love a story that takes place in Ireland? It’s technically book 3 of the “Dublin Murder Squad series,” but her books aren’t really sequential…you don’t have to read the others to know or enjoy what’s happening.

Ibland gjorde språket att det kändes som att boken var mer skriven för ungdomar än för mig. Trots det var boken bra. Trevligt med intriger och familjekonflikter blandat med kriminalhandlingen.

I loved this book. I had read Into the Woods and The Likeness but this by far was my favorite. Couldn't put it down. I loved this book. I had read Into the Woods and The Likeness but this by far was my favorite. Couldn't put it down.

I have a new favorite author. Tana French transported me to Ireland and I had trouble putting the book down and coming back to Kansas. Well written mystery about some seriously interesting characters, very disfunctional families, and how the choices we make can ripple across generations. Highly recommend you read this one!

This was a novel that is difficult to put down. The mystery is there and you keep on guessing and guessing but will find out that you're still wrong in the end.The narration of the undercover cop is enough to sustain your interest in the story. Although I liked how it was written and the Irish humor of the novel, the ending was kind of disappointing. I was expecting more action and complexities. I read Tana French's first book and the ending left so many loose ends that I was disappointed...I decided to give her another try and I did like this story much better...still fairly predictable.
