Living in a democracy, we are asked to help make critical decisions that affect all of us. Decisions concerning nuclear weapons are among the most important ones that our society can make today. Yet, many of us do not know what nuclear weapons are and what other countries or groups have or want them. This book is Volume 1 of a series of books that address weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Yet we live in an era where science and technology are rapidly advancing; in which our society is being asked to make important and costly decisions about such esoteric issues as arms control, nuclear reactors, nuclear proliferation, and ballistic missile defense. To make the best decisions to help ensure our safety and security, we need to be well informed. The information in this book is presented for people who have no prior background in the field. It is not intended to be exhaustive in detail, but rather provide a general overview of key topics. A strong science background is not required understand the material.
