Together with Aveling, McGlynn translation is probably the most decent translation of Sapardi Djoko Damono's poetry. Of course, the tricky deal about translation is that there will be missing elements. Sapardi's lyricism, for once, struggle to exist amidst the simplicity. While the translation works well, the way it adjusts the poetry to a new space (read: language) changes the poetry forever. Saya juga tidak tahu demi apa saya tiba-tiba memborong banyak buku puisi terutama milik pak Sapardi. Saya juga tidak tahu demi apa saya menikmati membaca buku-buku puisi ini, rasanya seperti menemukan rumah mungil baru di tengah taman yang cantik dan saya tergoda untuk masuk lalu minum teh sebentar di sana (kalau ini beneran saya pasti dikira maling jemuran) Tapi mungkin seperti yang dikatakan Shakespeare So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, so long lives this and this gives life to thee. y Saya juga tidak tahu demi apa saya tiba-tiba memborong banyak buku puisi terutama milik pak Sapardi. What john H McGlynn tryin to express is fundamentally not far from damono's meaning. He select from the very beginning not a sophisticated word. Look at Mc Glynn Translation on "yang fana adalah waktu". He don't need to specifically grab the same meaning word after word to translate damono's poem, but he choices the simple words - similar to the damono's behavior. I like this collection, and I kept this one in my "kamarbuku" - mein Bucheraum for more than 8 years. What john H McGlynn tryin to express is fundamentally not far from damono's meaning. Translating is never easy. And translating poetry is by far the most difficult, in my opinion. So much beauty and depth are lost in this English version of Mr. Sapardi's works. But it's good anyway that his beautiful poems will at least be known amongst the English speaking people. Translating is never easy.
