Adriana Trigiani's two remarkable grandmothers, Lucia and Viola, lived through the 20th century from beginning to end as working women who juggled careers and motherhood. From the factory line to the family table, the two of them - the very definition of modern women - cut a path for their granddaughter by demonstrating courage and skill in their fearless approach to life, Adriana Trigiani's two remarkable grandmothers, Lucia and Viola, lived through the 20th century from beginning to end as working women who juggled careers and motherhood. Trigiani visits the past to seek answers to the essential questions that define the challenges women face today: how we hold on to the values that make life rich and beautiful, how we can take risks and reap the rewards, how to stand resilient in the face of tragedy. It felt rushed and a little messy. But I love some of the advice and recipes passed down by the writer's grandmothers. It felt rushed and a little messy. But I love some of the advice and recipes passed down by the writer's grandmothers.

Having lost my own two grandmothers at a young age I was intrigued to read about Adriana's relationships with hers. Some lovely memories. Having lost my own two grandmothers at a young age I was intrigued to read about Adriana's relationships with hers. Some lovely memories.

I have read most of Adriana Trigiani’s books and noted the comparisons in our lives so I was interested to read about her grand-mothers. We are not too far apart in age, and although I am British Italian and she is American Italian a lot of our experiences are similar. I also had a grand-mother Lucia who came to live in Jersey from Italy after the war and she was a huge influence in my life until she died at 90. Never a day goes by when I don’t either think or say “my nonna would have said...” M I have read most of Adriana Trigiani’s books and noted the comparisons in our lives so I was interested to read about her grand-mothers. Never a day goes by when I don’t either think or say “my nonna would have said...” My other grandmother Giuditta did not leave Italy but in her very quiet way also influenced my values. She was a gentle, softly-spoken lady who was a seamstress and made me many clothes when I was young. My mother left Italy at 14, and she in turn has been a great influence on all her grand-children. My biggest hope is that my four grand-daughters will think of me half as fondly. The book was poignant but full of pearls of wisdom on all aspects of life, and death.

I appreciated the love that the author had for her grandmothers & enjoyed hearing about their journeys in life. But I also agree this was an average read by all accounts, maybe it lacked some personal depth as I felt rather indifferent about both the women. The wisdom she gathered from them both was ok but didn't feel she needed to give the reader her advice also about life?? Despite the wisdom of both her grandmothers this book comes across as rather ordinary. there lacked a certain emotional depth and thus as a reader I was not able to feel deeply for either of the subjects.

Loved the wisdom and life lessons in this book! It makes me think of all the wonderful things I learned from my own grandmother's example (she was from the same era)!
