A more accurate title might be "Reading British History in Children's Books," but the British focus is welcome. Butler and O'Donovan build on John Stephens's 1992 book on ideology and Rebecca Barnhouse's 2000 one about the Middle Ages in children's books and conclude that British history "continues to stimulate both writers and readers." They don't neglect older works that are still in print, notably those of Rosemary Sutcliff, but the majority of their examples are recent. It's also useful that they cross genre boundaries to show that representations of history are found in "alternative histories" like Pullman's Dark Materials trilogy or "quasi-histories" like Aiken's Dido Twite books, and they also discuss time-travel or time-slip fantasies. Books imagining a future reflecting past memories are fair game as well, such as Rosoff's How I Live Now. Anyone interested in history and how its representation changes or in children's and young adult books will find much to enjoy here.

Here it is. Not sure I quite believed it would get this far, though of course the sky could still fall before July...
