Unfortunately, of all the volumes I’ve read so far, this was my least favorite. But let me explain a bit why: -The whole idea revolving a race between Burst Linkers was like reading a Mario Kart race, so it’s not that original. Although, I have to give the author kudos because he truly knows how to balance action scenes with character development, and so it doesn’t feel that heavy on one side or another. -Rust Jigsaw makes an appearance again, but it doesn’t get a chance to explain why. He immediately attacks everybody with an Incarnate System that rusts all their armors, but even though he is quite a villain (or at least, someone that’s no hero by all means), we don’t understand the reasons why he’s acting that way. And when he is defeated by Silver Crow in his berserk form (aka Chrome Disaster), he leaves more questions than answers. -Chrome Disaster gets the best of Haru because, apparently, he’s been on the back of his head, telling him dark thoughts and making him hate everybody he confronts. Chrome Disaster was supposedly eliminated in the 2nd volume, along with Scarlet Rain’s parent, but now we see that it clings onto Silver Crow like a shadow. Will he appear again? Anyway, the thing that I loved the most about this volume was the scene where Haru and Kuroyukihime put their hearts out there. That scene got my crying (oh, bear with me, please) because it was so damn beautiful and touching. Those soft moments are important for their relationship as friends but also as a parent and a child in the Accel World. Also, Kuroyukihime clearly is far from being perfect, but when they both accept their flaws and their strengths too, they become better people. And to be able to see them grow like that, even if they’re teenagers, is something I’m grateful for. In addition, Nega Nebulus is becoming a true team, a true family! Every single one of them has their scars, but when people support each other, their hope, their trust in others, makes them stronger. And what is life and joy if you can’t share it with others? There wouldn’t be fun in playing a game without enjoying your time there, making both friends and rivals. Honestly, I’m so proud of Haru and how much he’s grown. I know he’s not everybody’s favorite hero, but to me is one of the most real people I’ve ever read. And a part of me sees myself in him. He has trouble finding himself worthy of love, of friends, and family, but the more we get to know him, the more he fights with along with this friends, he starts to believe in himself and that power alone is what makes these novels one of my favorites stories ever. I’ll be reading the next novels because the animated adaptation really stayed behind and this world deserves more attention! PREVIOUS REVIEWS: Volume 1 | Volume 2 | Volume 3 | Volume 4

For starters, volume 5 is even better than the previous two volumes. I absolutely loved this volume. What is there to say about Accel World Volume 5? For starters, volume 5 is even better than the previous two volumes. I absolutely loved this volume. Not only did it hold my attention all the way to the end, but I actually stayed up super late reading it, which I haven't done since the seventh Harry Potter book came out way back when. In this volume, a new dynamic is added to the world that Reki Kawahara has built. Space. A low orbit space elevator is going to be crossing over Japan, and it's going to have the same security cameras that are installed all over Japan. Here's a little info dump to help you all remember how Brain Burst works. When a Burst Linker “accelerates” using Brain Burst, their minds are essentially taken out of their physical bodies and placed in a virtual world made in the exact shape of Japan. This is only possible thanks to the millions of cameras installed across the country. The Brain Burst program utilizes those millions of cameras to break down the images and create a realistic 3-dimensional world that Burst Linkers battle in. And since the low orbit space elevator has those cameras, it means Burst Linkers will be able to travel up to the space station. Now, what makes this volume so amazing isn't the space elevator—at least, not to me. While that is an interesting new dynamic, the real treat comes from the character development during this book. I'm not talking about Haruyki. He doesn't change too much, though he does face some hardships. The real development is with Kuroyukihime, the leader of Nega Nebulus, the Black King otherwise known as Black Lotus, and Sky Raker. In the previous two volumes, Sky Raker was introduced as a member of the previous Nega Nebulus before Kuroyukihime was forced to go into hiding. In an effort to fly higher than she could using her Enhanced Armament, Gale Thruster, she forced Kuroyukihime to sever her avatar's legs. Since then, her legs have never healed. This volume is one that puts her struggles in the spotlight and let's us see someone other than the hardcore sadist who threw Haruyuki off of the Tokyo Tower when she was training him to use the Incarnate System. I really loved how we got to see more depth between these two characters. Kuroyukihime and Sky Raker knew each other before Haruyuki ever entered the picture. They have a shared past that he was not a part of. I thought it was wonderful that we were able to see some of that past being brought to the forefront in this volume, and I really loved how the dynamic between them developed throughout. Of course, it's not like the development and revealed history between these two was the only amazing aspect about this volume. Volume 5 had plenty of twists, turns, and over the top plot developments to fill an entire room. However, I'm not going to get into those. I will tell you that the plot twists will surprise you, that the intense action will entice you, and that you will be touched by what happens with Kuroyukihime and Sky Raker, but I won't tell you anymore than that. If you'd like to know more, I suggest buying the light novel. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Accel World v5 was a thrilling continuation of the storyline as it featured a return of one of the more compelling aspects of the previous major arcs, the dreaded Armor of Catastrophe, the Enchanted Armament, the Disaster. Entering in, one would think the space elevator aspect initially introduced would be a simple relaxing event for our protagonists to catch their breaths after the Acceleration Research Society and Dusk Taker’s antics of the previous two volume, however, immediately upon starting the space elevator antics we see that everything is not as it seems. I enjoyed the pacing of the volume from the simple refreshing reflection over the past struggles of the few months, especially with Haruyuki and his dealings with other legions, to even more personal growth based things like how he has friends and people he enjoys being with instead of being a loner who dedicated every bit of time he had to the local school net’s ball match. Though some parts of the original Haru remains, like how he’s scared against anyone in some sort of power or authority status, or has to be reminded that he can be confident and face others, and that he isn’t a loser, but he makes steady and realistic progress to growing himself as he becomes a bit more mature and molded by the people around him. For the major plot, it was thrilling, fun, and really pushed the science fiction idea of the story forward while continuing to provide deeper understanding of how Brain Burst and the Accelerated World works, even how reasoning works with both the Disaster and also with Rusk Jigsaw, the main antagonist, Incarnate Attack. There is still tons of potential to be explored in the franchise. Really awesome volume.
