This book contains over 600 recipes from Baghdad during its Golden Age in the ninth & tenth centuries. It provides insight into certain levels of society, not only through food, but poetry, conversation, and health advice. The translator provides an invaluable introduction into the history of medieval Arabic language cookbooks and an extensive glossary on cuisine related Arabic words.

"Hot water taken first thing in the morning can cleanse the stomach of the previous day's excretion." Both, the author and the translator, did a great job. The book is very organized and accurate. The author seems close to the reader. I found the glossary especially enriching and the translation accurate and easy to understand. It's simply an amazing book. "Hot water taken first thing in the morning can cleanse the stomach of the previous day's excretion." Both, the author and the translator, did a great job.
