Ex-mercenary Jack Vane was trying to be quietly drunk and not bother anyone, when he was accused of mass murder--the brutal slaughter of fifty-three Elite Media by an unknown attacker with a high-tech weapon. The so-called "Media-Killer" had left behind an anti-Media manifesto stating he had "punished the oath-breakers with death, for lying to the American people," and demanded "complete Media honesty in reporting, or more will die." Some swore the manifesto was written by Jack himself, who had "a history of hatred for the Media." Now--pursued by the FBI who has orders to shoot-to-kill, a mysterious cabal rooted in the Oval Office itself, that wants Jack dead, and a half-crazy, ex-girlfriend cop who lives to gun him down for dumping her--Jack runs for his life. Jack is trapped between a U.S. President who seeks reelection at any cost, and a Left-wing Media that will stop at nothing to guarantee his reelection. The President--if reelected--will invoke martial law in a totalitarian coup and war against the American people, and against democracy itself. But the real horror begins when Jack suspects an almost-paranormal tilt of destiny to the mystery. As Jack strives to defeat the tyrannical President , Jack does not suspect he will also discover a soul-shattering secret about himself--one that will transform him forever. Jack, you're not Jack anymore--

Don’t shoot the messenger…isn’t the request when someone delivers bad news? Some unknown “hero” is flushing out and killing the messengers— i.e., all of the left-wing media and politicians—in Friedberg’s “Kill the Media”. Just what are the media’s and the politicians’ roles in the “martial law conspiracy “and the fate of the world? What is their role in creating conditions via relentless propaganda? Some unknown “hero” is flushing out and killing the messengers— i.e., all of the left-wing media and politicians—in Friedberg’s “Kill the Media”. Just what are the media’s and the politicians’ roles in the “martial law conspiracy “and the fate of the world? What is their role in creating conditions via relentless propaganda? It’s precisely the type of martial law conspiracy that only our favorite drinking vigilante, Jack Vane, could be coerced into solving. Soon after an explosion at the New Mexico State House and the disappearance of an old man with a walker, the media killer’s manifesto appears and he’s demanding “complete media honesty in reporting or more will die.” Paranoid and on the run/in hiding since he lost everything in a bizarre fire on his last case (how it started is unknown, but Vane has his ideas), the ex-right-wing, Boy Scout, husband, boyfriend, and PI has a lot of suspects, but Vane is a targeted suspect himself. Now, not only does he have to clear his name, he has to discover who the “media killer” is before the killer strikes again or before Vane himself is killed. Besides Vane’s ex-girlfriend, who is half-crazed, believes he is the “media killer”, and is out to kill him, the author brings back other familiar characters and introduces us to new characters that create tension and then suddenly make us burst out in laughter. Friedberg delivers an ending that surprised the heck out of me after sending me traveling through the I-can’t-turn-the-pages-fast-enough paranormal/alternate universe/sarcastic/political humor and tension-filled story. I really enjoy the Jack Vane thrillers and, while this one was a little different, I believe if you like philosophical, political, sarcastic, humorous thrillers with an intense story line and great character development, you will enjoy this read.
