Let it be known that this book is primarily about vintage wedding dresses. Decor is most definitely an afterthought, and crowded into a few small photos throughout the book, while pages upon pages are devoted to vintage or new-vintage-style dresses. That said, the book has beautiful, full-color photos, and the best part was the real photos of real brides wearing their vintage dresses with their vintage decor. The author is British and a lot of the brides were also, so it was hard to get some American info out of it, but then again I'm a little jaded cheapo who finds the idea of getting a dressmaker to make my dress from scratch unfathomable. Now, the question: could one get the same information as presented in this book on the Internet without getting the book? Absolutely. But I think the real brides made the book worth taking a look at (unless they're on a blog somewhere).

Good general coverage of vintage eras. Pretty good pictures. I would have liked twice as many pictures. Good resources and references.

This is not my usual read -- I am disinclined towards weddings personally and marriage generally -- but the call of vintage styling and the charm of this book series made it an easy pick up from the library. It was a lovely book, and Beeforth clearly knows her subject. For the enterprising couple, there is much that is useful in here, as a starting point for creating a vintage wedding. However, I was very uncomfortable that all the professional models were white but one -- when you're spanning seven decades and styling for the contemporary person, the lack of inclusivity felt quite prominent. Furthermore, all the "real brides" appeared white as well, and the two elements together really didn't do much for suggesting that vintage styling is something all could enjoy, that it's not just a pursuit of white privilege. I call that out specifically because there are incredible fashionistas all over the world on Instagram etc who feature their own vintage styling, of every race and ethnicity. The author's blog covers weddings throughout the UK and it seems improbable that she didn't feature a single woman of color in her brides. (I will note that a few of the grooms were men of color, but the book was focused on bridalwear.) Similarly, it was disheartening that a book published in 2013 featured exactly zero non-heterosexual wedding couples; every "real bride" story was a male and female couple, both who appeared cisgender. While same-sex marriage became legal in the UK in 2014, civil partnerships for same-sex couples have been available since 2004, and weddings themselves are not equivalent to legal recognition of a partnership. Granted, I don't know a great deal about the wedding industry at large, so perhaps even today the focus of wedding marketing is heterosexual forcing GLTBQ weddings to remain niche; but it seems hilariously off-tone and out of touch for a contemporary book on weddings to not feature a single queer couple. It's funny -- I'd like to give this book 4 stars, because I was very intrigued by the vintage styling, much more so than I anticipated being given the subject matter; but in many ways the book reinforced the very reasons I dismiss weddings as a personal life event.

I am not getting married, but I picked this book up for historical education. I also wanted vintage hair and makeup inspiration. If this is you, this doesn’t exist here. I read digitally and so I can’t vouch for the physical copy but here the photos felt like they were just kind of tossed in. There is good information and it’s not a bad book necessarily. It’s just not executed the best nor is it what I was looking for. I will say there are tips for “body types” which were just written a bit off c I am not getting married, but I picked this book up for historical education. I think the information could have been portrayed without saying “wear this if your body looks like this” more or less. I also felt the 80s could have been included, minor complaint but how can we talk about iconic wedding looks and ignore this.

I received this book on Netgalley, and I must say, though I intended to just browse through the images, I ended up reading the entire book cover to cover. The author does an incredible job researching and presenting the different fashions from the early twentieth century to the 1970s. The text is well written and the images used are lovely. The end section of the book with links is incredibly helpful. Immediately after reading the book, I browsed several of the sites and found fashions I loved. Prior to reading this I never gave vintage wedding dresses a thought. However, after reading this and looking at the descriptions of each time period, I must say a 1950s wedding dress is EXACTLY the style I want! It's so nice to know this even though I'm not even engaged. Well, maybe someday I'll be able to pick out a dress... As a final note, this book also mentions other titles available by this series, and I absolutely MUST get Style Me Vintage: Tea Parties immediately. I've been wanting to throw a tea party for years now!

I really enjoyed reading through this book. It gives you both a historical and modern view into various stages of wedding fashion. I loved that it had vintage photos along with newer ones, so you could get a good idea of different styles. It does say it is for styling vintage weddings, but it focused mainly on the wedding dresses. I would have liked to see more on other aspects of the wedding, but other than that I liked the book. It has a very fun but historical feel to it. I definitely be using I really enjoyed reading through this book. It gives you both a historical and modern view into various stages of wedding fashion. I would recommend this book to all upcoming brides who are planning their own wedding. When you get married, your day should be unique to you- not just a cookie-cutter assemblage of this year’s newest wedding trends. Beeforth takes the time to explain various aspects of vintage clothing, so ANY bride can pick it up and enjoy it. You don’t have to be a fashion junkie to use this book to its full potential. This book is lots of fun. I enjoyed seeing all the different decades and styles of wedding dresses and accessories, plus reading the personal stories of brides in each decade as they recalled their choices. This book is an excellent source for anyone researching the history of fashion and the styles of each decade. Much of the information is not limited to weddings, but also includes make up and hair styles. Very interesting!

Lots of great photos. UK sources, so US ladies would have to look on ebay or shop locally to find what they need. Liked that she showed pics from the period as well as how to interpret a vintage look/theme today. She recommends cutting up vintage gowns to achieve the look you want--I was asked once to remake a dress that was about 150 years old--there's no way; I couldn't do it. I made the bow ties instead.

3.5 stars. This book has some helpful tips for how to choose and what to look for in vintage wedding gowns and an interesting section on vintage scents and perfumes. If you are interested in a vintage wedding you probably know everything you're going to read in here. And it's really focused on bridal style so if you're looking for broader inspiration I'd look elsewhere.

Good book with lots of inspiration for period weddings. Lots of websites listed in the back. There's just one thing, though - I can't say much about the other periods, but the chapter about the '70's confused me. I don't remember any of those designer wedding dress styles back then and I'm pretty sure I was there!!!

I'm planning a vintage wedding for next June and was so happy to read this book. It is beautifully put together and the ideas are lovely. The entire book has a delicate vintage feel. I'm definitely taking ideas for my wedding. My only wish is to have this as a beautiful hard copy to stare at over and over again!

Some great tips on theme, style and motif. Gives a great idea of the decades and styles that work for your body shape. Some suggestions that I had not thought about that would add interesting layers to the event. Some silly suggestions as well that come off as cheap.

a good source for inspiration and real-life brides donning vintage style but not totally practical in the sense of finding items for your own wedding.

I wish there were less (or smaller) photos of the professional models and more (bigger) of the real brides. I received more inspiration from the real bride photos than the professional shoots!

You won't get authentic to the time ideas for your wedding, but you definitely get a lot of inspiration from it! Lovely brides, lovely ideas, and a lovely book!
