Since completing Hyman's 10-day sugar detox over a month ago, at least 80% of my meals have been from this book. I love that I have a go-to cookbook I can trust to get meals that taste good and are balanced. Pro tip: the chocolate peanut butter cups are addictive and you will want to make them all the time because they're so quick and fairly healthy. I like that the book has the design it does rather than being a glossy cookbook because I think it helps drive home that the recipes are medically beneficial. The downside is that because of the name and design, it's made me second guess whether I'd want to give this as a gift because it just doesn't seem...gift-y enough.

The book does include some yummy looking recipes - though without photos. It is very wordy and not something I would personally refer to constantly for visuals (especially for a cook book). The ingredients are not common also in Asia. But still, good recommendation for a healthier diet for diabetics or even for the rest of us to eat healthily.

While I'm not exactly the target audience for this book, I am enjoying the recipes. They are well-rounded, include fat from good sources, and are quite tasty. The shopping lists and detailed explanations are very helpful and it's great that Hyman includes places to buy the ingredients he prescribes. Unfortunately they do not apply to everyone, such as people living in small towns, far from large city centres, or not in the US, but that is not Hyman's fault. The philosophy he presents sounds very catchy but is nothing new. It is not some revolutionary system. It is just a healthy diet. I have no doubt that following his system will help people lower their blood pressure, lose weight, be healthier, etcetera, because it is a healthy diet. But nothing more. Also, diabesity isn't a thing.

Knowing how rampant the issue of obesity and how it affects our blood sugar, it's no wonder that today there are more diagnosed cases of Type 2 Diabetes than ever before and it's not only affecting older adults but teens and young children as well. So what can you do? Dr. Mark Hyman offers a solution to help remedy the spikes in one's blood sugar and to aid in reducing our dependency on sugary foods in his latest book, The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook. It is the perfect companion book to accompany his earlier book, The Blood Sugar Solution. Having a mother-in-law with Diabetes and knowing that my husband and children are susceptible to possibly having health issues in the near future, I wanted to know what I could do now to eliminate the need for insulin shots later as well all know how important diet and exercise can play in reducing our dependency on drugs to treat diabetes. In this book, Dr. Hyman presents more than 175 delicious and simply easy to make meals and recipes that support the Blood Sugar Solution lifestyle, allowing you to take back your health with wholesome, flavorful and simple meals. "We all know the cure for what ails us - both in our bodies and in our nation - can be found in the kitchen. It is a place to rebuild community and connection, strengthen bonds with family and friends, teach life-giving skills to our children, enrich and nourish our bodies and souls. Yet, in the twenty-first century, our kitchens (and our taste buds) have been hijacked by the food industry. In 1900 only 2 percent of our meals were eaten outside of the home; today that number is over 50 percent. " (pg 11). We need a revolution to take back our kitchens and our homes. The solution is in our shopping carts, our refridgerators, and our cupboards - and on our dining room tables. This is where the power is. It is in the hundreds of small choices you make every day, choices that will topple the monolithic food industry. We have now raised the second generation of Americans who don't know how to cook. The average child in American doesn't know how to identify even the most basic fruits and vegetables; our kids don't know where their food comes from or even that it grows on a farm. Cooking means microwaving. Food comes in boxes, plastic bags and cans. Reading labels is supremely unhelpful in identifying the source of most foods - the ingredients are mostly factory-made science projects with a remote and unrecognizable lineage to real food. This book gives you advice on what to keep and what to discard from your fridge, pantry, and shopping cart. It also provides recipes to delight your palate, stimulate your senses, and nourish your body and soul. The recipes are designed to be made, shared, and enjoyed with family and friends. In this one way, one by one, kitchen by kitchen, community by community - we will take back our health together. I received The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook by Dr. Mark Hyman compliments of Little Brown and Company, a division of Hachette Book Groups for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable one. Seeing as how this could definitely benefit virtually everyone I know and help them get back to maintaining a healthier lifestyle, I can easily rate this one a 4.5 out of 5 stars. This book shows you how to make plans now to get back to a healthy way of eating including how to having fun while cooking, what kitchen tools every kitchen should have and the recipes are geared by not only price but length of time to cook, so you can find something to please every single time management and financial situation.

The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook is a cookbook that can be used by itself or with the The Blood Sugar Solution book by the same author. The book shows how to do a kitchen makeover (pantry and fridge) and shows through recipes and diet coaching how to cancel out disease caused by poor nutrition. The book shows how to do a kitchen makeover (pantry and fridge) and shows through recipes and diet coaching how to cancel out disease caused by poor nutrition. In the first chapter, Mark Hyman states: "[The Blood Sugar Solution] provides a step-by-step, goof-proof plan to reverse the root causes of diabetes and obesity - what I call diabesity...[and] provides a road map for us to get healthy together." Hyman explains that 'diabesity' is blood sugar and insulin imbalance. He states this problem is global, and affects both overweight and skinny people. He even provides a quiz so readers can see if they are at risk. The two plans to reverse or prevent diabesity are The Basic and The Advanced plans. The Basic Plan is for anyone and the Advanced Plan is for severe cases of diabesity. The diets are low-glycemic and consist of nutrient-dense starches, high-quality proteins, and no- or low-starchy vegetables. The Advanced Plan gets rid of grains all together. The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook includes recipes and how to properly shop and stock your pantry for products that are actually good for the body. He advocates 'unjunking' the diet by cutting out sugar, flour, all processed foods, as well as gluten and dairy products. Recipes for both plans include menu items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with soups, salads, entrees, snacks, and desserts to choose from. This book is not for the faint of heart - it is rigorous and demanding, and completely eliminating cold turkey all the things Hyman suggests would be difficult even for the seasoned healthy food dieter or gluten-free advocate, or those that know the difference between starchy and non-starchy vegetables. But if you are wanting a serious approach to combating type 2 diabetes and other ailments attributed solely to poor nutrition, this book is spot-on and a tremendous wake up call to eat better. Note: This book was published on my book blog.

I received an advance copy of "The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook" from the First Reads promotion. (Thank you!) Having not yet read "The Blood Sugar Solution," I am not sure that I can fairly evaluate the effectiveness of the 175 recipes in this book. However, I am familiar with other low-glycemic index/low-carbohydrate weight loss plans such as The South Beach Diet and I think that most of the recipes in The Blood Sugar Solution Cookbook could be useful to followers of similar eating plans. The author is clearly passionate about encouraging people to eat healthier. He coins a term "diabesity" which refers to both diabetes and obesity. I can't evaluate whether his eating plan will be successful for those who need to lose weight and/or lower their blood sugar, but I think that he is on the right track. When I compare this cookbook to other similar cookbooks that I own, The Blood Sugar Solution, comes up short because of the physical design of the book. There are very few color photographs and the paper quality of the volume that I received feels thin. At the $29.99 price point, I expect many more photographs [to entice the reader to want to prepare the recipes], and a higher quality, more sturdy paper, . I also question the inclusion of some esoteric ingredients in some of the recipes such as hemp powder, chia seeds, and protein powders - items that may not be easily accessible for most readers.

My mother was ecstatic about this book; she heard about it on TV and couldn’t wait to read it herself. This book is not just a cookbook. Before you even get to the recipes in this book it lays down the foundation to a diet that will make a better body not just too losing weight. The recipes aren’t just for people who are diabetic, though they are good for people who suffer from the disease. The book lays down what is wrong with many foods that are commonly eaten in our country and what should be eaten and is good for the body. After laying down the foundation and explaining the idea behind this way of eating better, it then goes into the recipes. My Mother and I tried a few of the recipes and they were surprisingly good. My mother is even trying to adapt this diet into her life so she can try and get off many of the diabetes medications and to live a better healthier life. All in all I think this book is more than just a cookbook and can make a huge difference in many people’s lives in learning what food is good for their body and which food is bad and the differences the food one eats make in a person’s overall health.

This is not really a cookbook, but a companion of recipes to the author's previous books. There were only a few photos in the center of the book, not near their recipes. I want to be enticed by a photo to try a recipe. The author's writing style is dry and redundant -- I was not engaged at all. The recipes are inconsistent and not well organized. I must say I did LOVE the vegetarian chili recipe -- the quinoa adds a meaty taste that impressed me. My meat loving boys gobbled it up, not realizing it was vegetarian. That's a winner for me!

This book seemed unrealistic, and even worse, elitist. The basic principles of eating whole food, upping your non-starchy veggies, and moderation in meat certainly hold true, but there were some statements that raised red flags for me as a nutrition scientist (e.g., that GMOs are proven to cause cancer). Many people suffering from poor nutrition are of limited financial means. Wow, I am so glad I received this book from Goodreads. I am always looking for recipes that are suitable for my family, my husband has type 2 diabetes and we have two boys that are always active. After only having this book for two days we have already tried six recipes and eight more are planned for this week. I can't wait to try the breakfast smoothies for myself this week. I liked the first part of the book, but once it got to the recipes, the ingredients list made me second guess the book. Some of these ingredients I've never heard of, or have no place nearby to find them. There were probably about 5 recipes I could make right now without having to go to the store. The diet plan idea is sound, but the recipes are harder to follow. And there were only a few pictures at the end, I like to know what I'm making is supposed to look like. Ok, so I didn't READ all of it. It's a cookbook. I browsed it. My big complaint is that there are no ingredient notes. None. Lots of these recipes call for stuff I've no idea how to find. And I'm not a some kind of food ignorant dummy. But would it be too hard to add a line of explanation on some of this stuff? Of all the recipes in the book, it's the soups that looked most promising. Good hearty bean and vegetable soups and stews. Ok, so I didn't READ all of it. It's a cookbook. I browsed it. My big complaint is that there are no ingredient notes. None. Lots of great recipes. Really looking forward to trying out many of them - especially the soups. Only improvement was if the book had pictures with the recipes. I gained some really helpful recipes to add to my recipe book. While there were some meals I didn't think I'd use, there were plenty others that I could see myself incorporating into my meal planning.
