Let's meet a police officer is a nice way to introduce what a police officers job is. It shows children that they are always around to protect us whenever we need it. I wonder what it's like growing up where a "school resource officer" is a common sight... I wonder what it's like growing up where a "school resource officer" is a common sight...

This was a good book that I would totally recommend reading to children. It shows them how police officers are important and the different duties they may have.

Critique: This is a book for introducing community helpers in kindergarten and first grade. The character are not real, so it's fictional, but it keeps the reader informed as well as interested as it explains the need for community helpers like police officers in life. The illustrations in this story are bright and colorful and do a great job at telling the story without the text being needed. Prompts/Questions: What does a police officer do? Why do we have them? Have you ever seen one in your neighborhood? Why would police officers use different types of transportations? Why do you think a police dog would be needed? Craft Elements: Have students make a thank you card for an officer near their school. Explain that we need our police officers and that we are so thankful for all they do. You could also have students draw a picture of what a police officer does.

This is a good way to introduce exactly what police officers do. Children can relate to the different images to crossing the street, driving in a car and the different cars they drive. After reading this book teachers can ask families and children to create a collage of different places they've seen police officers. And why they think being a police officer is important.
