Even if you don't know anything of the remarkable Elizabeth Wiskeman's wartime experiences (she worked for British intelligence in Switzerland and maybe prevented, maybe just postponed, the transportation of many Hungarian Jews to Germany) you can tell from the first few pages how much she knew and was involved with this period. She speaks of the statesmen of the time as though she knew them all, and is prepared to condemn or exalt individuals in a single line. She speaks of the statesmen of the time as though she knew them all, and is prepared to condemn or exalt individuals in a single line. Whether you want to test her assertions is of course your right, but I think she would argue that to give more space to the individuals would challenge her purpose, which is to describe the broad sweep of this remarkable period of history. So the Spanish Civil War gets a chapter only. She is not afraid to delve into the realities of Balkan quarrels though, or to hold our hands on the many and complex changes of map that seemed to take place on an hourly basis. And to read her analysis (she is particularly understanding and credible on how Germany was taken over by Hitler's fascists) is to be taken open-mouthed through a period when so much depravity was confronted by so much equivocation. Let's all be thankful for the European Union and its role in preventing such mayhem in our times.
