We owned the whole set of these books, in my family growing up. I loved every one of them; the sheer variety was one of the draws. There are illustrated children's stories, abridged versions of classics, essays about nature or geography, and they're all written to be interesting to kids. I saved a few volumes of this series, still love to re-read them every once in awhile.

This book, like others in the series, is interesting for its variety. Any given volume has a combination of historical, fantastic, educational, and classic stories. Unfortunately, A Christmas Carol is "abridged for young people," and loses a considerable amount of its power as a result--that story never seems to be retold properly--but as a historical curiosity (1957), this book is worth grabbing if you see it in a used book store, as likely are its counterparts. The other high point of the book This book, like others in the series, is interesting for its variety. Any given volume has a combination of historical, fantastic, educational, and classic stories. The other high point of the book is its illustrations. They are quite vibrant, and apparently feature early (uncredited) work by some now well-known illustrators and children's writers, but I can't attest to this personally.
