This book is an essential read to anyone trying to understand the complexities of Afghanistan, or purely just for someone interested in finding out a little more about the country constantly in our news. A collection of accounts from some superb authors on different aspects of life in Afghanistan, the book provides something for everyone. History, culture, religion, war, women, cuisine - it's all there. Highly recommended :)

The book tries to look at Afghanistan through the eyes of various specialists. At the end the reader gets a kaleidoscopic image of the country not usually found in the media narratives. It is a great idea, and the book succeeds to an extent but the execution could be better. The essay on the afghan food Helen Saberi was particularly enjoyable. The essay on the afghan food Helen Saberi was particularly enjoyable. I found the article by Yossef Bodansky very intriguing as it tries to provide Chinese angle to the recent developments in Afghanistan. However, the article provides no references and kind of reads like a great piece of conspiracy theory. I could find no reference to "Behind the Urals" strategy of China, nor a secret agreement between USSR and Indira Gandhi to partition Pakistan (or CIA assassinating her as a consequence), we just have to take the authors word as gospel. The articles by Ahmed Rashid ("Afghan Endgame") & Victoria Schofield ("Pakistan's Badlands") were very good. They give overview of ISI's ambitions, US misadventure, Pakistans stake & the consequences of hedging bets in Afghanistan war. The discussions on how Britain used Afghanistan and NWPF as a double buffer against Russia, and the tactics used to suppress opposition to the British influence was also illuminating. Though a number of articles discuss the recent history of Afghanistan, the sequence of rulers was never clear, maybe a succinct timeline could have served the book better. Another shortcoming was absence of clear maps.

Excellent book. Different experts wrote different parts of the book. Explains a lot of what has happened in Afghanistan (politically, historically, religiously, etc.) and what it means for the future.

This had good info on the history and society. Because each section was written by a different author, some of it was often repeated. Overall, the book was very interesting.
