Perfect-sized travel guide with a pull-out map. The information is well organized by neighborhood and has just the right amount of suggestions, with helpful details. I only would've liked more information about coffeeshops, maybe one for each neighborhood as bars and restaurants are listed. Bon voyage!

    > After seeing the tourist sights, seek out the offbeat music clubs, bohemian artist quarters, sweet patisseries and quirky local shops that make up the locals' Amsterdam. Right. Which are in this book. Making them tourist and not off beat. > After seeing the tourist sights, seek out the offbeat music clubs, bohemian artist quarters, sweet patisseries and quirky local shops that make up the locals' Amsterdam. This was the best of the Amsterdam guides I read.

These pocket-sized guides serve as great tasters for the bigger, more in-depth books. I've used the Dublin one in the past, and the Amsterdam one has proven to be equally useful and informative.

The map was quite limited, and the information a bit out of date (was published in 2013). But the fact that it was divided by area made it easy to use, it provided useful info on certain things - e.g. the difference between a coffee shop and a cafe, why it's not OK to take photos of prostitutes etc. Gave some good shops to visit, I went to Hema (basically wilkinsons) and the Kitch Kitchen - but didn't actually make it to any of the restaurants listed. Bit annoyed that the tattoo museum is still in the book when it's closed down. It was a good way to pick out things to do, but some attractions were made more of than others. The sexmuseum for instance was pretty dull, not a lot of information, just random collections of stuff. I would have liked to know a little more about the kinds of things on offer at each site. Still, useful, and I could keep it in my handbag.

Good neighborhood breakdown and suggested walks. Really out-of-date restaurant and other recommendations - many were permanently closed, not necessarily recently. If you're just looking for the walking suggestions and don't care about food, you'll probably find this more helpful. (Reviewed in 2020, based on the most recent edition, published 2018.)

Going to Amsterdam in August. We'll see how good it is when I'm there!

A nice compact guide to Amsterdam including a map. I only looked at the places we will be visiting, but this is one you could easily carry along in a pocket.
