Once upon a time, the spirit of an evil Nine Tailed Fox wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents. The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life. He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people. Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows. The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world. Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same. They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families. Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child. On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade. He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways. He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods. His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike. He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time. Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage. Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood. Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers. Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village. He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption. Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war. He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes. The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja. Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation. Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes. The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies. There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly. There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills. Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy. The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway. The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on. On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are. One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them. How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction. Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story. Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues. A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later. Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc... Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general. It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin. The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular. Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one.

He's got a wild sense of humor, but Naruto is completely serious about his mission to be the world's greatest ninja! CELL SEVEN REUNION Sasuke, Sakura and Naruto finally meet, as the former classmates' complicated past gives way to a violent and unsure future. Naruto realizes he must eventually battle Sasuke one-on-one... to the death! But with Sasuke and his dark allies bent on complete destruction, and political intrigue in the villages, will the powerful Allied Shinobi Forces allow the two 'friends' to meet in battle?! MY OPINION As Sasuke makes a move to kill Sakura, he is stopped by Kakashi. Startled, Sakura goes to work on Karin, trying to save Sasuke's teammate. But when she makes a move to strike at Sasuke with a poison dipped kunai, the tables are turned and Sakura once again almost gets killed only to be saved just in the knick of time by Naruto. Naruto and Sasuke have a short battle/argument. Sasuke does not believe that Naruto will ever be able to understand him, but Naruto does understand. And he knows that Sasuke also knows, through an exchange of blows, that if the pair are to fight, it will be to the death with both of the likely to die in the end. Sasuke agrees to fight Naruto and leaves with Madara, leaving Karin to the Konoha ninja. Sasuke decides its time he takes Itachi's eyes for his own. As the group returns to the village, Lady Tsunade awakens from her coma and returns to her position as Hokage. The Five Shadows meet and decide it best to send Naruto and Killer Bee, the last two remaining Jinchuriki into hiding on an isolated island in the Raikage's territory. It is on this island that Naruto begins his training to be able to control the Nine Tails. Quote: "Hey, Naruto... I hope you're not just saying you're going to kill Sasuke... but are actually planning to protect him..."

This volume was hard on me. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke reunited, with Sakura trying to assassinate her flame and Naruto throwing down the gauntlet to his best friend. It easily gave me chills. It was over too soon though. At least we can move on to another stage of the story and we all know that Naruto has to grow yet stronger if he's ever going to keep up with that monster Sasuke. Naruto and Sasuke finally come to blows, but it's used to establish motivations as we enter the war arc. Nothing too big comes out of it. We get the ninja alliance setting up for the war, Tobi getting some new tools to set up for the war, and Naruto doing some exposition-heavy deep dive on Bee so he can learn how to be a better jinchuriki. For Sakura to be as strong as she is, and as smart as she is, and to still nearly kill herself by getting involved in Sasuke...It disheartens me and I wish better for the poor girl. It’s cool seeing everyone prepare for the next Shinobi War and glad to see Lady Tsunade up and moving again. I’m interested to see what happens with Naruto and the Waterfall of Truth, and am starting to like Killer Bee’s character.

Maybe 4.5? I did like it very much, but a) Killer Bee still annoys me and b) Sasuke was annoying with the whole Uchiha superiority complex going on, and what he was saying didn't make much sense to me; among maybe other things? Sakura sneaks up behind Sasuke but cannot bring herself to kill him. Sasuke tries to kill her, but Naruto saves her at the last second. Sasuke reveals to Naruto that he wants to destroy Konoha and Naruto says he understands. They both attack each other with the chidori and rasengan and Naruto says their roles could easily have been reversed as he harbored resentment towards the village for a long time. Zetsu and Madara appear. Naruto says that both him and Sasuke have grown in power. He says any battle between the two of them will result in both their deaths. Naruto tells Sasuke he will be waiting for him. Madara teleports Sasuke away. Sasuke tells him he wants Itachi's eyes now that his are blind. Naruto passes out from being cut by Sakura's poisoned kunai from earlier. Killer Bee is brought back to the lightning village with Kisame's sword. Unknown to him, Kisme is hidden inside of it, gathering intel on the unified shinobi force, which the nations' leaders have all just agreed to. After Naruto is healed, he tells the group that he has decided to fight Sasuke one-on-one, which they don't like. Kakashi is just about to be named hokage when Tsunade wakes up, with he seems happy about. Grandpa Sage summons Naruto to the mountain again. They read his future (he will meet an octopus and battle a boy with ocular powers) and give him the key to the Nine Tails' seal on his stomach. Kabuto has been almost completely taken over by Orochimaru's chakra. He is leaving a trail of dead bodies for Anko and her team to follow. Kabuto meets with Madara and promises to help him using the Orochimaru's edotensei (reanimation jutsu). He has brought back all the Akatsuki's corpses. He also brings out another coffin (but we don't get to see who's inside it) when Madara doesn't agree to his teams (which are handing Sasuke over for study in exchange for his help). After seeing the coffin, Madara agrees. The Gokage meet again and decide to detain Killer Bee and Naruto (with Yamato and Guy supervising) on one of the lightning village's islands. Naruto asks Bee to train him, but he refuses. Naruto asks for help for Motoi, another lightning ninja, who takes him to a training waterfall. Naruto meets the darkness in his heart, the part of him that has been helping to fuel the Nine Tails' hatred. Naruto is unable to defeat him since they have the exact same powers. Motoi reveals that he once tried to kill Bee because of his hatred towards jinchuuriki and now he is too ashamed to be near Bee. A giant squid attacks Motoi and Bee saves him, instantly forgiving him. First half with Sasuke was awesome, second half on the island was good.

For me, this is a rather momentous volume; this is when I stopped reading scanlations of Naruto and started reading the series through Viz Media's official English language releases. Following the cliffhanger of an ending in the previous volume, #52 is a momentous twist in the post-time skip storyline, pitting friends against friends in a world on the verge of war. It's filled to the brim with the kind of heart pounding action, human drama, well-balanced humor, and colorful characters that has made Naruto such a smashing success in the first place. It's got me excited for the rest of the series, and I haven't been this excited for a while. You can read the rest of my review at Nagareboshi Reviews!

It's feeling a bit like old Naruto. The pattern of Big Bad Boss Appears, Training Ensues continues in this volume. I'm certainly not complaining. I picked "Naruto, Vol. 52: Cell Seven " because I am a big fan of anime books. In this book Naruto and his friends discover the eight tale master who has controlled his spirit the most. Now Naruto has wanted his help to control the nine tales the strongest of them all. My favorite quote is " Don't loss your trust in me" because it shows how determined he is. I think the writers style is very creative and descriptive. I recommend this book to all the people who like the anime genre. Kabuto was always a character I really liked. And poor Sakura. Guys, we all can act irrationally due to our feelings for someone. So it makes perfect sense regarding her and Sasuke. Put yourself in her position before instantly judging. Sasuke may not love her but she loves him enough to risk it. And I admire her for that. Even Naruto loves Sasuke-as a brother and best friend.
