Everyone should be so fortunate in their lives to have a peek into their past and have such a connection." - MC "Another fabulous story by Melissa Soldani Lemon. A story of a granddaughter's love for her Abuela (grandmother) and her story of standing in her family's history on an island that had long been denied entry to Americans. Follow this history professor and "very good Cuban granddaughter" on an intimate and heart warming adventure across the invisible wall that separates Cubans and Cuban-Americans and makes her first visit to Cuba." - TC

This author has numerous degrees and is a college professor, but memoir writing is not her forte. Perhaps she was trying to stay light and conversational, but the voice was immature. Maybe she was trying to be funny and I just didn’t get it? The overabundance of proofreading errors did me in--one example from hundreds: “The people he is speaking to with look tired.”--and significantly took away any enjoyment I might have found in reading the book. Her Marilope tangent was over the top. Lemon’s priorities were off-kilter. She was supposed to be in Cuba for a long-awaited visit with loved ones and appreciating quality time spent with her mother. All she did was complain about the lousy food and feral cats.
