Kozak “The Everything U.S. Constitution Book” is an accessible guide on the U.S. Constitution. This well-written book helps the reader understand how the U.S. Constitution works, why it works and how it has changed over time. The Everything Series is a wonderful series of books that make difficult topics accessible to the masses while providing a format that highlights important aspects of it: common questions, facts, urgent warning and quick handy tips. This educational 304-page book is composed of thirteen chapters: 1. The Great Experiment, 2. The Preamble, 3. Constitutional Rules on How to Use the Constitution, 4. The Executive Branch, 5. The Legislative Branch, 6. The Judicial Branch, 7. The Bill of Rights How the Constitution Affects People, 8. The Expansion of Individual Rights, 9. Fine-Tuning the Law of the Land, 10. The Great Mistake, 11. Clearing Up Some Misconceptions about the Constitution, 12. Preserving the System Changes That Didn’t Make It, and 13. The Controversial Constitution. Positives: 1. A well-written and accessible book for the masses. 2. An important topic covered with expertise. Every key term is explained in a lucid and direct manner. 3. Even-handed and fair. Ms. Kozak treats this subject with the utmost care and respect. 4. The Everything Series provides a wonderful format that is reader friendly. 5. The author does a good job of interspersing interesting tidbits and giving the narrative life of what could otherwise have been a very dry read. 6. What the U.S. Constitution is. The purpose, background, the Founders, the issues, in practice… 7. The first attempt…The Articles of Confederation. The importance of the document and what it accomplished. 8. The importance of the Preamble. 9. This book goes over the entire U.S. Constitution that is all seven articles and all the sections. The author adds commentary to clarify key points. 10. How to use the U.S. Constitution. “Read the rules for using a law before you try to understand the law itself”. A lot of interesting topics are covered: obligations and rights of the States, the rights of individual citizens, slavery, adding new states, and secession to name a few. 11. The Executive Branch: defining the Chief Executive, the powers of the President, the Executive Departments, the Amendments that impacted the Executive Branch, Elections, etc… 12. The Legislative Branch: a bicameral legislature, powers of the Legislative Branch, special powers granted to each House, Limits of power, how bills become law, etc… 13. The Judicial Branch: The powers, Federal and State jurisdiction, common law, how Federal Courts are organized, etc… 14. The Bill of Rights. The author goes over the history of every right and provides the meaning and intent of each one. Excellent section. 15. Interesting sections on slavery and the women’s suffrage movement. 16. The Amendment process. 17. The one great mistake of U.S. Constitution. 18. The author adds a helpful chapter that addresses common misconceptions about the Constitution. 19. What hasn’t made the U.S. Constitution and why. 20. Helpful clarifications on common legal terms such as judicial activism. 21. Selected bibliography, links to popular websites, and helpful appendices. Negatives: 1. No direct links to notes or sources. 2. A couple of misspells as an example the word sworn was misspelled. But very few and far between. 3. No illustrations or charts that could have added value. 4. As expected lacks depth in some areas. The sections on the Supreme Court ws lacking more than other areas. In summary, never underestimate a book from The Everything Series. These books do a good job of covering complex topics in an accessible manner and this one on the U.S. Constitution succeeds as well. Kozak does this book justice by providing the reader with all the essentials regarding the U.S. Constitution. If you are looking for an accessible and fair book on the U.S. Constitution that can serve as a future reference, this is it. I recommend it.
