Up until the end, I think this was maybe 3 stars? And then....the ending. It almost seemed like the author got tired of writing this book, and just said "THE HELL WITH IT" and finished with the most abrupt, ridiculous wrap-up I've ever seen. The hero went from suffering from severe mental issues concerning childhood abuse/refusing to consider children in his future to "LET'S MAKE A BABY, HONEY!" in one paragraph. Speechless. Sort of funny. And it was free. So there's that at least. I think I'm gonn Up until the end, I think this was maybe 3 stars? And then....the ending. That was not a very good book. The whole story takes place in less than 1 week, which does not leave room for character development, emotions growing or realism. The characters are a bit schematic and often behave irrationally or unrealistically. And there was too much sex, and furthermore unprotected sex, considering the length of the story. I did not buy their HEA.

Good book. Gillian is back on Wolff Mountain and staying with her mother while she looks for a new job. When her car goes off the road in the rain, she is rescued by Devlyn, who doesn't recognize her at first. As a way to help her out while keeping her close, he hires her as a consultant for the school his family is building in the nearby town. Their attraction is intense, but both of them have some serious issues to overcome before they can be together. I really liked both Gillian and Devlyn. Gillian was very cautious about being around Devlyn. She knew that their attraction couldn't go anywhere. He is a rich playboy who dates some of the most beautiful women around. She is an ordinary looking third grade teacher whose mother is the Wolff's housekeeper. Those feelings aren't helped by her mother who keeps emphasizing those differences instead of telling her that she is good enough for anyone. Devlyn has never wanted to commit to anyone. He has some things in his past that make him certain that he would never be a good husband or father. When they split over his attitude, both are heartbroken, though he doesn't really understand why he feels the way he does. Gillian goes to him and finally gets the story of why he feels as he does and is able to show him how wrong he is to be worried. I loved the way she went after him and wouldn't let him chase her away.

After Devlyn rescues Gillian from a car accident, they both have a case of the hot pants for each other. Yeah, cuz car accidents will do that to you. However, they must resist their strong attraction to each other. Devlyn because he's a Harlequin man - he's got issues. Gillian because she's a Harlequin heroine - she doesn't think she's pretty enough for him. Thankfully all of their problems are easily overcome with a couple of bouts of adequate sex. I love the Wolff books, a lot. This one was no exception. I fell in love with the heroine right away and drooled over the hero. Also it’s easy to “make your first million” when you already have money — unless you’re telling us that he is supposed to be spoiled and snobby (you probably weren’t). The novel kicks off with our über-rich CEO Devlyn Wolff driving home to his Wolff Mountain (you will also see many lone wolf reference and plays on his last name) in the dusk when an oncoming car wrapped itself into a telephone pole. You guessed it; the person in that car is the other protagonist to our Devlyn — Gillian Carlyle, his family’s maid’s daughter — which he doesn’t recognize because they haven’t seen each other in a long time. They used to know each other! A second chance. A tragic history to their lives. I feel like I typed the exact same review already. The book is boring. I mean great — your family has a dark past — apparently everyone in these books all do. There’s nothing making you stand out against all the other books. You didn’t even make me cry (or care)! There was no obstacles. No one really cared that you two are together minus stern warnings. The sex parts weren’t even good. (I guess you can’t write cock in Harlequin books but you can write breasts?) I give it 2/5 because the book threw in a nice plot of philanthropy for Devlyn and his Wolff family. It was worth the quick read but not your money. Also kids, always wear condoms. Characters who don’t wear condoms take me out of the story unless it is intention.

This brings cute and sexy opportunities for outside sexy time which is uncomfortable and I personally do not recommend but beggars can't be choosers when there are intrusive observant family members at the homes so private time is difficult to find. Well written and edited romance which is expected with Harlequin publications, with a surprising hidden child abuse theme that is treated with respect. 192 pages and found this as a kindle freebie 2 stars

Looking through the ratings I see that either people enjoyed it a lot or not at all. I however, love Devlyn as a character just for the mere fact that he is tormented. Yes to many that may sound strange but I like how the author seemed to be able to grasp the emotion behind his character and describe what he was feeling and why and how through time that feeling did or did not progress. I will admit that I found his 'finding' the one to get him to realize it was not his fault and healing him busi Looking through the ratings I see that either people enjoyed it a lot or not at all. But overall because of his character I have to say I liked the book. Since I received this for free, this is the first I am reading of the series. So if I come by the others I most definitely see myself reading them, for we see how Devlyn was not the only one tormented by their pasts.

If there had to be a "big fight" why couldn't they have been trying to work it out and keep Jamie's abuse triggering Devlyn's memories, running away and Gillian going after him. Or having him want to have kids in an epilogue set few months later. It still wouldn't be perfect of course but I feel like it would've been better. Gotta say I'm not the biggest fan of Annalise, she was mean (and not only here from what I remember). I understand that she cares about her family and it's admirable but being mean and throwing accusations simply based on the fact that Gillian was housekeeper's daughter. If she thought her brother was being stupid for helping someone out or being used she should go to him about it, especially without evidence. When she first talked to him instead she said Gillian wasn't too pretty. Charming that one.

I could swear that I have read this before but it may have been before Goodreads. Typical whirlwind romance with hero just sure there’s no way he’ll ever be good enough to be a husband and a heroine who loves him so much he can fight his demons.

❤❤ My enjoyment in the Men Of Wolff Mountain series started on a high. Gareth is one of those heroes you (well me anyway) dream about long after a book is over. Then there was middle brother Jacob's book and frankly I thought his story was going to blow my mind. At best it was irksome. Now it's time for the 3 Wolff cousins, Devlyn, Annalise and Larkin. Devlyn's story starts us off and unfortunately I wasn't wowed. That means there is only up from here, right? So I'm eagerly awaiting Annalise's story next (Jan 2013). When Gillian Carlyle crashes her car on an isolated highway, billionaire playboy and CEO of Wolff Enterprises, Devlyn Wolff is the Good Samartian who rescues her. Devlyn has a bad habit of rescuing strays and paying for it in the end. He doesn't recognize Gillian but she remembers him from childhood. Devlyn knows it will take some times for help to reach them on this isolated road and even though it will cause him to miss a dinner with a prospective investor he carries Gillian to his car, planning to drive her to meet up with the paramedics en route. She's just been in a car wreck, potentially seriously injured, she looks a mess and Devlyn is imagining her naked. We're 4 pages in and this is one giant reason why I didn't care for this book. The thought was so ill-timed and unnecessary. I'm almost never turned off by premature attraction but this one made no sense and felt artificial. (view spoiler)[Since Gillian and Devlyn know one another, Devlyn simply doesn't recognize her yet, I thought perhaps Maynard did this to show that there's always been this connection between them or some sort of history. But as you read further you realize that Gillian made Devlyn a card expressing how sorry she was his mother (and aunt) had been killed. Devlyn reacted poorly. Gillian simply avoided him from them on. Turns out he kept the card and it meant a lot and, well again normally I'd be all over this sentimental stuff but the story felt like it was cut from a pattern for major plot points and most things seemed ill timed. (hide spoiler)] So from here Devlyn offers the out of work school teacher a job because coincidentally the Wolff clan is opening a school in the area. This way Devlyn can keep her close and wear her down. He moves her into the main house. She happens to be the maid's daughter and no one seems happy she's there. From here on I just kept thinking it was all too convenient or lame. So I didn't enjoy this one on the whole. However, one thing I've praised Janice Maynard for is creating scenes that stick with you long after the book is done. And she did that in this book one as well. That's really good writing and a rarity but she has a knack for it. Plus, Devlyn ended up having some really sweet lines. So while this book didn't do it for me, I have no doubt that most people will be entertained and enjoy it.

I couldn't exactly say the same for the reading experience though. I'm an optimistic reader. Although I have the knee jerk reaction of judging books by its cover, I've got the irritating habit of plodding on to The End despite the fact that the first lines were a “Meh!” experience. And because it was free and I do love romance serials, I still plodded on. There were times I wanted to coast through paragraphs of exposition, but I didn't want to miss anything so I read page by page by page... There were a lot of good points: the love scenes were tastefully written, the internal development was evocative...but there's only a lot you can forgive this romance. There were boring moments and yes, the timeline was so short to develop a really good satisfying relationship (one week?!). I gave it a 3-star read, mainly because although I liked the hero, there were some gaping holes in his characterization. And the heroine...she had some worldviews that I didn't agree with.

I really enjoyed this book. This was a very emotional story. The Hero, and Heroine were wonderful people. Devylyn Wolff has a heart of gold. First of all, I have to say that this story isn't believable at all. So you meet a childhood friend (you're not even friends, actually) after a long time and decided to get intimate for a while but you fell in love with each other. All in a matter of about 4 days? That, you will have to read to find out. This was a very cute romantic story.

I enjoyed this book, I did feel it moved to fast. His sister went from mean to sweet really fast with not much explaining it. The end moved along to fast. This book left a lot of explaining in a lot of areas. It was a nice book that I did enjoy. I just wish it would have slowed down without jumping to them starting a family so soon. I would have enjoyed seeing how well he would have made a father in the end.
