A graphic novel about a band. The introduction was quite good, but the book lacked narrative direction and I found the illustrations confusing. Overall rating 2.5.

First off, I'm not the type of person who idolizes stars. I know of Metallica, have heard some of their music, but don't idolize them. Stark and lacking a sense of narrative direction, there doesn't seem to be a reason to root for these guys. What do they even want? Perhaps this was intentional to give a sense of impartiality to the book for more avid fans. First off, I'm not the type of person who idolizes stars. I like Metallica's music and I've always enjoyed watching their evolution through each released album. This book was an interesting insight (though it did lack a real narrative direction) into the band and how they came to be Metallica. The illustrations were great and compelling enough for me to finish the book in a single setting. I've watched numerous documentaries and interviews in which James Hetfield talks about his own origins, but I never realized he had such a confused childhood until I I like Metallica's music and I've always enjoyed watching their evolution through each released album.

I read this because I liked other work by this author/illustrator team but this book left me wanting more. It was the simplest telling of the history of Metallica and truthfully nothing different than the basic info of a VH1 special. That said I appreciated the illustrations which seemed to redeem the book.

Whilst reading Libra by Don DeLillo which is a fantastic if very intense book, I got recommended this by a friend. I read it in 2 days. I'm not the biggest consumer of graphic novels, but this is great fun. As something of a Metallica fan it didn't necessarily tell me anything new, but it was a nice bit of light reading for someone who's usually involved in relatively heavyweight fiction.
