If you're into stuff like this, you can read the full review. "David Starr - Space Ranger" by Isaac Asimov/Paul French or "How Reading Vintage/Crappy SF Is Good For You" Isaac Asimov in disguise... I read this book for the first time a long time ago in a portuguese-brasilian edition. I've decided to re-read it again in English to see whether the original flavour was still there... Once in a while I have to let the inner geek out, though my wife tries to make sure it doesn’t happen too often...Yes, I confess. I'm a SF/Fantasy nerd at heart. SF was the main type of literature of my youth, filling it with time and space travel, aliens and starships. Then I read non-SF fiction for almost two decades and found a few years back that enough was enough. You can read the rest of this review elsewhere.

This book collects the first two of Asimov's "Lucky Starr" novels in a single volume. Ostensibly written for younger readers, Asimov either regularly underestimates his adult readership or, more likely, gives great credit to his younger readers, as the author never dumbs things down or panders to youth. Ostensibly written for younger readers, Asimov either regularly underestimates his adult readership or, more likely, gives great credit to his younger readers, as the author never dumbs things down or panders to youth. There are a few tell-tales here and there, but by and large adult fans of Asimov's sci-fi should find these reasonably rewarding. Like many of Asimov's novels, these combine elements of speculative fiction (much of which has, naturally enough, aged poorly) and mystery, in these cases also mixing in a healthy dose of adventure. Unabashedly influenced by The Lone Ranger, it is the action and adventure elements which, more than anything, aim to satisfy a younger readership. In addition, Asimov does not delve too deeply into the scientific basis of his speculative technologies, although this probably freed him in some ways. His vision of a future in which interstellar travel has become relatively commonplace, of course, seems highly unlikely from a 21st century perspective, but that's a criticism which could lay low the bulk of science fiction, both past and present. As it stands, avid adult fans of Asimov's work will probably want to get around to these works eventually. By far their most cringe-worthy attributes are their titles.
