Markham is a collection of fifty points of socio-economic doom and gloom which the author contends could become reality if “The Affordable Health Care Act” is not drastically revised before full implementation. Markham points out that inherent within this latest law of the land are many hidden and dangerous potentialities. Markham has presented his own list of possibilities, and even though his writing is half tongue-in-cheek, he makes a surprisingly strong and logical argument in support of most of them. Of all the many unwanted and unanticipated negative effects of Obama Care discussed by Markham, perhaps his most likely and legitimate concern is the absence of any tort reform embodied within the law. As Markham rightly states, health care costs have increased exponentially over the past few decades, largely due to exorbitantly high and outrageous malpractice lawsuits. Markham asserts that sans tort reform, Obama Care will unleash a new wave of such suits, possibly bankrupting itself – and the nation – before it gains much headway. “Fifty Shades of Pain” is an intriguing commentary on Obama Care. Although written in a light-hearted, humorous style, Markham’s fifty ‘shades’ are, for the most part, valid and quite possible. It is a rare book that can make a reader laugh one moment, then shake his head in dismay the next, yet that is exactly what “Fifty Shades of Pain” does. Frankly, if so many of the author’s points didn’t have a ring of truth about them, this book could easily be classified as pure humor. But as he rightly asserts, they do have a ring of truth about them, and that is unsettling, to say the least. Because Markham is an attorney, his knowledge of law in general, and this law in particular, is perhaps more reliable than might be the case with a ‘John Q. Citizen’ author. Building on his education and experience in the field of law, Markham has compiled a list of significant and highly discomfiting possibilities that may result from Obama Care. “Fifty Shades of Pain” should be required reading for Congress. After you read it, think about sending a copy to your elected officials in Washington D.C.
