"Legacy is not an afterthought", quotes the author, "rather it is a thoughtful process of deciding on gifts to share with future generations". Well Written, clear and precise directions preparing you for starting a legacy for your family to carry on. This author has done all the preparation work for you and even crated a worksheet to get you started. I enjoyed every page of this wonderfully written book. I can even attest that I have begun putting together my own legacy for our family because of "Legacy is not an afterthought", quotes the author, "rather it is a thoughtful process of deciding on gifts to share with future generations". I can even attest that I have begun putting together my own legacy for our family because of the passion this author put into this book. I am excited and now truly understand and see why we need to show our future generations all that has been done throughout the years to get them where they are today! Thank you Richard O. Weijo, PhD for showing me the way! I was given this book in exchange for an honest review through goodreads. I highly recommend this book for reading.

Kirkus Reviews "A thoughtfully constructed guide to leaving a legacy. Writer/consultant Weijo was struck by "the power and importance of legacy" by three events: the birth of his granddaughter, learning he had cancer, and the discovery of old coins collected by himself, his wife and their parents. Writer/consultant Weijo was struck by "the power and importance of legacy" by three events: the birth of his granddaughter, learning he had cancer, and the discovery of old coins collected by himself, his wife and their parents. This led him to formulate his own process for creating a legacy "focused on helping future generations avoid missteps and guiding them with the knowledge and heritage of past generations." In this brief yet informative guide, Weijo first talks about the meaning of legacy and then explores the effect one's ancestors can have on future generations through a novel example: Barack Obama. "It was a very complex legacy provided from two different continents," Weijo writes. "Such a rich legacy our president was given by those who came before him." Weijo acknowledges that other factors also influenced Obama's rise to the presidency, but the impact of his ancestry is nothing if not intriguing. Next, Weijo adeptly covers the benefits derived from creating a legacy, guiding the reader through the legacy creation process: how to decide on scope, determine themes and recipients, select gifts and create action plans, etc. The author makes a salient point along the way: "Legacy gifts do not have to be just money or property; remember to also share your values and wisdom." In fact, Weijo describes how he used the coins he found as the basis for an ongoing collection that both represents his family's timeline and gives him the opportunity to educate his granddaughter about such good ideas as investing for the long term. Included ... are useful forms—input worksheets and legacy theme worksheets—to help facilitate the creation of a legacy plan. Weijo appends his own legacy plan as a detailed example for the reader ... Clear, concise, and well-written; a finely crafted manual offering instructive and valuable assistance to those who want to leave a lasting legacy." - Kirkus Reviews

Our Dreams for Our Children is a valuable reference for those who want a concise introduction to creating personal legacies. The book is approachable and its content is easily managed. Except for the tangental chapter on President Barack Obama's family legacy, there are no pages of fluff for the reader to wade through. The author presents a well organized approach, and when appropriate, useful references are provided for further exploration. Although the book is written with an older baby boomer audience in mind, the author's advice and guidance is worth the attention of younger millennials such as myself. My personal interest in legacy grew out of a near fatal illness when my eldest son was only two years old. I had never before that ordeal given thought to what I would leave to my children. As the author says, "we all believe we have more time." As I faced my own mortality, I realized the importance of formulating a legacy before it is too late. I found Our Dreams for Our Children to be a useful resource in formulating what my personal legacy will be.

This book caught my eye while I was browsing at the library. I love the ideas of manifestos and legacies, leaving one's mark on the world or just ensuring one doesn't do too much damage to the world that's not ours alone but to every living creature that inhabits it.
