Well, I had forgotten about this series, after having read five volumes, so after two years picked it up again. I had four-starred each of the previous volumes, primarily because of the great art and relationships. It’s an elaborate gang story with too many characters to keep track of, even after reviewing what happened in the previous volumes, but as it turns out this is a big, splashy, dramatic volume. This is seinen manga, for teens and adults, focused primarily on three young people. This is seinen manga, for teens and adults, focused primarily on three young people. Worick is a gigolo, blind in one eye, Nick deaf; together they liberate a young prostitute, Alex, who joins them in their work of "handymen" who do independent criminal jobs, sort of like Ronin samurai warriors. Gangsta is set in the future, and is very violent, with sex and drugs, and highly stylized visuals. And in spite of the dramatic surface, it’s primarily character-driven. In this one the reveals and twists and acts of violence are sometimes on the gasp level (and in black and white, too!) though I will admit I am still a bit lost, there's so many different gangs and characters. I will try to get into it again, though. There’s one moment that reminds you that Kohske isn’t just about the action sequences he draws particularly well; a Hunter, Delico, realizes one of his targets is his long lost sister, Eliza. Uh oh. Lots of feels.

How am I supposed to survive with a cliffhanger like that!? After finishing the anime, I had to catch up on the manga due to cosplaying Nic next weekend to an event. Why did I do that. DNF I keep trying but this series just kept going downhill for me. and then I find out the author has discontinued the series. Not going to fret and be confused reading a series when the creator can't even finish it.

OH MY GOD, DELICO AND YANG, I AM NOT OKAY. THERE'S NO ENGLISH LANGUAGE RELEASE DATE FOR VOLUME 7, I AM DEFINITELY NOT OKAY. I guess any manga volume that reduces me to capslock gets 5 stars.

From beginning to end, the sixth volume of Kohske's "Gangsta" series thrusts a dense amount of truth into the light. Not only for the antiheroes we love, but for the adversaries readers could have mixed feelings for too. It was a volume that also shed light on the bonds the Twilights and Normals share with one another, some platonic and others romantic. They, along with moments of comedy between Ally and Worick, Cody and Chad, grant the reader a change of pace that is much appreciated. Granted, it is often in times of hardship and loss, but it still reminds the reader that in times of pain we can pause and laugh or feel sympathy and empathy that changes our perspective for the better. Given the ending of this volume it is clear we will need more pauses like that now that things are going to take a turn for the unknown and the lethal. Volume seven will contain justice for some, but at a cost. Who will pay the ultimate price? There is one way to find out; just keep reading!

While I still love the plot twists and developing relationships between characters, as well as Kohske's awesome art style, the books are drifting closer to "being unhappy all the time" than I would like. I'm not good at sticking to a series with so few moments of levity between horrible and depressing scenes. I'm a reader who needs a break every once in a while so that I can see how the characters are processing events and how they've been affected. This is not the case with Gangsta., which will switch from one heart-wrenching plot twist to the next with no remorse. I'll finish up the next volume and the first of the spin-off series, but I'm not sure if I'll read further than that. It's still a great ride, just a little too bleak for my tastes.

Everything that happened in the last chapter and how the cliffhanger ending went...This type of stuff should be illegal. I think I felt my heart ache when reading/seeing the last few pages.

I fear I will need therapy after what happened in this volume. Delico Nic Worrick Theo... Besides the betrayal and reveals I felt the plot twist was overdone and outta the blue.

Another high stakes volume... Nic’s continual self-destruction is fascinating and heart-breaking, especially seeing Worick and Al’s reactions to his choices.

Damn, the reveal of the level of betrayal that's been building up was truly awful. Now I want to see how it was handled in the anime.

More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog http://surrealtalvi.wordpress.com/ Gangsta truly is one of the best manga out there right now. From its nuanced, intricate, and brutal storyline to the clean artwork and imaginative panel layouts, it's hard to believe that this is Kohske's debut series. Even after 6 volumes, the story still has so many surprises, reveals, and plot twists. But at its heart, it's still very much about relationships - and perhaps that is why this particular volume is especially devastating in that regard. Whether sibling or lover, there are always consequences at the heart of Gangsta's pathos. And Kohske knows how to let a story flow organically but powerfully. The situation continues to devolve in Ergastulum. Originally founded as a quarantine for manufactured soldiers known as Twilights, then later populated by criminals and immigrants, the situation was always going to be explosive. But now, after 100 years, that city has become a powder keg of anti-Twilight sentiment and it is about to explode. The attack on the nightclub Bastard has left the Handymen, Delico's group, and Christiano greatly damaged. But the source of the Hunter attacks is now ready to reveal himself - with devastating consequences for all. Nearly every character is given a moment in this volume - to shine or to fall from grace. The plot is still expanding but for the most part, there are no new characters in volume 6. Rather, the focus is on those who would protect the people they cherish and those who will then casually betray all. Loss and gain are also explored as siblings and lovers, friends and acquaintances face death and more as a result of the Hunter's latest incursion. Where the first several volumes focused mostly or Worick and Nicholas, with this volume nearly every characters is featured is some very important way. I can't emphasize enough how impressive the drawing and storytelling are in Gangsta. The perspectives, clean line work, originality of characters, and distinct layout make for one very high art form of storytelling. It's one of those stories that benefits from the graphic format rather than is limited by it. I always greatly look forward to each release and Viz's excellent translation work (so important on a nuanced story like Gangsta). Fortunately, Kohske's got a lot of story left in Gangsta but I can only imagine how amazing her next project will be. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Ohhh... Last volume is definitely when the anime adapation finished. We learn that the tags have something else added to them other than that the tags keep track of the individual's vital signs. I don't know what to make of this all. Delico, Ian, and Nico have started an attack against Mikhail. It's cool to see them work together and I guess Ian and Delico understand Nicolas whenever he's "talking". I sort of just thought that only Worick and a select few knew sign language. HAHAHA. Of course, it would make sense that they knew it seeing as how they've known each other since the orphanage age. OH HOO HOO. NICOLAS WHEN HE'S IN BATTLE. OH, WAIT. WHAAAAAAT. I knew that Monroe was going to be seeing Corsica but whaaaaat. Is this one of those things where Monroe pretends to side with Corsica and then GUTS HIM WHEN HE'S CLOSE? NAHHHH. DANGGGG. Delico... Papa Monroe is the bad guy. This took a dark turn, too. That glasses guy that works at Bastard. The one who plays the piano the second time that Alex performs. The one with glasses. Ooooh. WHAT'S HIS NAME. YANGGGGGG. OMG. THIS CHAPTER. MY HEART. Erika is so gone. Mannn. They just up and left Mikhail like that. Maybe he'll get revenge. He's a child, afterall. This volume. Man. What they did to Connie. My goodness. Kousuke is such a genius. This volume covers chapters 29-34

Without going into too much spoilerific derail, I was disappointed by the main twist/reveal in this volume. It seemed unlikely to me and just didn't feel "right"/believable. On the other hand, there were still some good "Gangsta" characteristics at work in the volume. Other storylines in the series are being realized in satisfying ways, it's definitely an emotional roller coaster, and it's still raising new questions all the time. And the art-- as always-- is fantastic.
