    I usually enjoy boys' adventure books, even when the plot and characters are pretty much stock and unoriginal, but this one wasn't my favorite of its kind. The writing felt clunky and bland, with a lot of repetition, too much information, and some outright contradictions. Also, I'm pretty sure I counted three round-ups over the space of not very many weeks... Also, while I love adoption stories as a rule, I'm always a little ambivalent to adopted kids who are obsessed with finding out about thei I usually enjoy boys' adventure books, even when the plot and characters are pretty much stock and unoriginal, but this one wasn't my favorite of its kind. Also, while I love adoption stories as a rule, I'm always a little ambivalent to adopted kids who are obsessed with finding out about their birth families. I mean, I can understand the shock and the curiosity, but suddenly feeling awkward and like you don't belong with the people who have been your family as long as you can remember just feels off to me. But that's mostly just a pet peeve on my part. :) Content--fighting; various dangerous situations including cattle stampedes, prairie fires, etc.; some stereotyped dialogue from/threats toward a Chinese character
