Second Thoughts (Stone - Government Agent #2)

Availability: Ready to download

Ernie Stone lives a secret life of intrigue and danger. As a covert operative for the government he’s seen more than the average hundred agents yet what he finds in Puerto Rico tops it all. Sent on a seemingly simple operation to find and kill a monster terrorizing a secret research facility, he expects to be in and out of the country quickly. What could possibly be so bad Ernie Stone lives a secret life of intrigue and danger. As a covert operative for the government he’s seen more than the average hundred agents yet what he finds in Puerto Rico tops it all. Sent on a seemingly simple operation to find and kill a monster terrorizing a secret research facility, he expects to be in and out of the country quickly. What could possibly be so bad in Puerto Rico, after all, a monster, really? Until he sees the monster, he discovers what it really is, all the easy options go out the window. He knows he has to do the right thing. He just wishes the right thing didn't cause him to have second thoughts. Beaten, bruised and feeling betrayed by those he trusted most, he finds himself deep in the jungles of Puerto Rico tracking down a real life nightmare. If it doesn't kill him first, he might be able to save its life. Either way, he might not make it home again. Covert operatives who go off-mission are usually targeted for termination. Ernie knows that. He just figures doing what’s right has to come first. It’s what any red-blooded Texas boy would do.

What a book. This book really grabbed my attention and kept it till the end of the book. And left me wanting to read the next book immediately. Luckily, there are still three more to read. The main character Ernest Stone, Ernie to his friends, which I feel like is a retired military man that does "special" assignments for unknown employers. Can't say too much without spoiling the plot. Ernie has a very special lady in his life. Her name is Shelby. And she's probably the best part of his life. At What a book. Shelby is his precious dog. Unfortunately, she doesn't appear in most of the book, which takes place in Puerto Rico at a secret lab. Lot's of twist and turns there. And, luckily, not too much scientific jargon. I realize now that this is the second of the four books. Now I need to read the first book and the last two. Not sure of the order I will do that in, though. But you will be soon be reading reviews for the rest of this series. I was given a free copy of this book in return for an honest review, which this is.

This was an interesting book, with an enjoyable protagonist. You want to believe, from the number of times Ernie is told "You talk funny", that is it supposed to be a parody of the Secret Government Black-ops type of book, employing the good old Texas boy persona to make you smile. It just does not come off that way after the most unbelievable scenarios that Ernie can "Aw Shucks" his way out of any situation. I enjoy this genre of books and I think humor has a valid place in any plot line, but t This was an interesting book, with an enjoyable protagonist. It just does not come off that way after the most unbelievable scenarios that Ernie can "Aw Shucks" his way out of any situation. I enjoy this genre of books and I think humor has a valid place in any plot line, but this borders on slapstick, pie-in-the-face comedy. The other characters, for the most part, are well presented and the transitions are fairly smooth. I just cannot make up my mind whether the author was trying to entertain me or just make me roll my eyes, like I would at a 3 Stooges film. Still, there is a glimmer of hope that these things will smooth out in Ernie's further adventures. I will go back and read the first of these four books, to see if #3 & #4 are worth pursuing. For the record, I was provided with a copy of this book, in return for my honest, unbiased opinion.

Fresh from an underwater mission in the Bermuda Triangle, Ernest Stone is lucky to have gotten out alive. And his new companion showed him how she truly missed him when he came home from that mission. But, of course, he couldn't enjoy the luxury of his new home because soon he was being sent out again on an undercover mission, this time to a science research facility in Puerto Rico where a monster terrorized and attacked some scientists. When face to face with the Chupacabra, he had second thoughts about his mission. What should he do? This was such an exciting read. Although I quite miss the usual banter between Frank & Ernie, still, the book proved to be better and more daring than the first. Not only were we taken to the Bermuda Triangle, readers also got the chance to experience the warmth and "hospitality from the jungles" of Puerto Rico. Ernie even found himself in a deeper and more dangerous situation, something that might cost him his dear life, as well as "Father's". This is another must read from Ruth Ford Elward!

I am enjoying reading this series via Reading Deals Review Club where I get the books for free in exchange for an honest review. This story is a Military, International Intrigue with a few unnatural twists and turns. The main character, Ernest Stone, is sent on a mission that causes him to have second thoughts on accepting his mission and the person who sent him on it. I love that Ms. Elward has her character doing the right thing even when it may mean his life is marked for termination. Warning: I recommend this book for Mature Audiences due to violence, adult language, and sexual situations.
