For those that like literary graphic novels, this book of recommendations will have something for you. The author warns that this is a very subjective list, and it shows. Memoirs, and memoir-style titles seem to be a particular favourite of the author, and it should be noted that the majority of these entries are for teens or older. While there are examples of other genres, they are among the most well-known, so it is best to look elsewhere for recommendations. Concise summaries cut to the heart of each book or series, explaining what makes it worthy of the title "outstanding", and the author does do a good job of selecting from a range of classic to modern. A useful tool, but only for those seeking literary graphic novels.

Opened up a new world to me, that of graphic novels. Gave interesting paragraphs worth of description. Have added about half a dozen to my To Read list.

The trouble with list books that are compiled by only one person is that they're just one guy's opinion. You can't really fault a guy for leaving off a book he didn't view as essential the same way you could fault a team of a dozen critics. In that way, the book isn't bad, but it's not an especially adventurous list if you really know the world of comics. Honestly, you can Google any similar list and find one that's almost exactly like this one. A decent list, with a few I hadn't heard of before, but that is all it is - a list, with a brief summary for each book. There are also some typos, the most glaring being a picture of the graphic novel Blankets by Craig Thompson next to the description of the book Manga: The Complete Guide by Jason Thompson.

Pretty much just a list, but it felt thorough and varied.
