The stories I did read were interesting and enjoyable. Unfortunately, I did not like the majority of this collection because I did not like the Amelia Butterworth-Spinster lady sleuth series, which comprised a healthy section of this megapack. Generally, I find these megapacks to be a good bargain and I enjoy reading the stories written in a gentler and more innocent era. It makes a refreshing change from all the psychopathic serial killers written about today.

It seems a little odd to critique a collection of stories that cost 99 cents, but here goes... I bought this because I was interested in reading the Loveday Brooke stories, which were easily worth the price. As far as everything else, there were two categories: 1) The public-domain Victorian stories. These were all exactly in keeping with the time they were written - if you like Sherlock Holmes, you’ll probably like them. 2) The smattering of more contemporary stories. I’m not sure if these are in the collection because they lapsed into public domain or if the story rights were dirt cheap, but they were uniformly terrible. Stories that were set in the last 50 years somehow felt more dated that stories set in 1900. (There’s a particularly cringeworthy story that is really trying to be progressive but manages to wedge in every 1990’s lesbian stereotype). Are these digital collections worth it? While the story selections are somewhat random...At the price, if you only like a handful of stories, you can’t beat it. Plus, hunting down physical copies of some of these old books might cost you a small fortune.
