A weird middle-book and yet one that hits a nice stride. This volume straddles the end of the previous story, of Ranma and Akane feuding with ice skating wrestlers (what a wonderful nemesis to have), and the coming of Shampoo, the mad Amazon who wants to marry Ranma’s male half and kill his female half. Both parts of the volume are demented and zany, but would probably fit better in a bigger collection that nested more context. Regardless, the book was a joy to read. Both parts of the volume are demented and zany, but would probably fit better in a bigger collection that nested more context. Regardless, the book was a joy to read. My favorite part is Ryoga’s character development, and his uniquely dorky romance. He’s now opting to be stuck as a pig so he can spend time as Akane’s pet, because that’s the only way he can safely get her to be affectionate towards him. If the book was one ounce more serious, this would be creepy and terrible. As a sitcom, though, it’s adorable, especially for how deathly anxious Ryoga is about it. His attempts to invade the ice skate wrestling (I’m still glad that’s a thing) makes it one of the best fight scenes in the series so far, as he accidentally destroys the ice rink and both he and Ranma run the risk of falling into the water below and transforming. If nothing else, Takahashi put a disturbing amount of thought into the ridiculous perils her characters get into. Then Shampoo shows up, literally at the moment when the ice skating nonsense is over, punching through the wall and into the plot. At first I sighed at the thought of yet another enemy showing up to fight the Tendo kids. Yet that’s not what she’s here for – instead, she’s on this mad courting ritual that has remarkably little violence, and instead is about characters trying to avoid each other, and Ranma and Akane constantly being separated and set against each other even as they fall more attached. This is the basic formula for the romance that never resolves, a curse the Ranma ½ series has thick around it, but for right now it works. I get why they’re not confessing to each other, and even am amused at how many interlopers are trying to screw up their relationship. What a tangled web they weave when everyone falls in love with the wrong person.

The third volume in this series just keeps upping the silliness. I hope the parade of weird characters never ends.

This volume finishes up the martial arts figure skating (which gives us the first “Akane is my fiancé!” declaration). But don’t worry - Akane and Ranma don’t have time to get close before Shampoo, the Chinese Amazon, enters the story. (Sounds pretty shaky for a matriarchal warrior society, but I’m gonna let that pass.) She begins doting on Ranma and he realizes that she’s pretty cute. (“If only Akane acted like this!” he states, adding fuel to the fire that is my shipping heart.) Shampoo and Akane argue, though, and Shampoo nearly kills Akane’s cute little pig (who’s Ryoga, in cursed form. Shhh, don’t tell Akane!). So she gives Akane the Kiss of Death and vows to kill her to get her out of the way. Instead, she shows mercy and just uses a shampoo/shiatsu technique to erase Ranma from Akane’s memories. Ranma does his best to bring Akane back to herself, and shows his curse to Shampoo, telling her the truth: he’s really a girl. This makes Shampoo quite sad, but she also says she’s leaving for good. —- Shampoo is beautiful and funny as a character, because she switches from lethal to adorable in seconds. The writing is a bit annoying, as they give her broken Japanese/ english. I don’t think it’s racist, as other characters from China don’t. It’s probably more for the hot/cute foreign girl feels. It’s not really fun either way. But again—I’m reading for nostalgia feels! So this volume hits the spot. :)

P-Chan is a blessing especially when he spends half his panels with frustrated angry tears in his eyes. I love to see him cry because I love him guys I promise. 4. There were, however, way too many panels in this volume dedicated to fight sequences. Ranma is a great story, but its strength lies in humor and characters. The fights don't really add all that much.

I read books 3 & 4 as part of a reading challenge. I've never read Manga before and although I did laugh once or twice, it was all so absurd and so filled with fighting that I did not find it enjoyable at all, mostly mystifying, and was glad it could get through it quickly. I also wasn't a big fan of the way the women were depicted. I definitely won't be back for more. I read books 3 & 4 as part of a reading challenge. Yeah!...I can't stand Shampoo. (sulks) The ice skating martial art competition goes about how you'd expect: destruction of the ice, impossible aerial attacks, sweet Ranma/Akane moment and Ryoga arriving to mess things up halfway through. Just as it ends, Shampoo enters the picture swinging her 'bleach balls of doom' in order to kill female Ranma. Akane and Ryoga are not much of a help at first, though Akane does become an impediment which Shampoo is forced to take care of. The hijinks continues as Shampoo falls in love with male Ranma while still trying to kill girl!Ranma, Akane's memories of Ranma are 'Shampooed' away (yeah, I still cringe every time), and P-chan is nearly served as lunch. The 'battle' on the ice rink is rather fun to see and how they break through to Akane's memories is very touching and funny. And I love the female ice skater where she names every cute thing and then acts like a klepto. It is hilarious, particularly when she steals the blanket off her partner at one point. I laugh every times she names something new. And what is up with everyone falling in love with one or the other gender of Ranma? He's a nice, if not incredibly bright guy and a cute girl but it's like he's got pheromones or something. I like him better then Ryoga though, although Ryoga for all his stubbornness and sense of direction he appears to have bequeathed to Roranora Zoro (One Piece) is not that bad a character. He is just not meant to rival Ranma. *The Rant* I really can't stand Shampoo. She's rather stereotypical, very flat as a character, and attacks people by...shampooing their hair?! Yeah, not really digging this new character. *Conclusion* Just to find out the ending of the ice skating makes this volume worth reading and the Shampoo story is wrapped up in the same book. Hope the next volume is a bit more interesting though.

His unshakable love for Akane, his undying hate for Ranma, and his terrible sense of directions just make me love him more. This volume also introduces Ranma's relentless foe, Shampoo. The situation gets complicated when Shampoo uncovers a side to Ranma that she didn't know existed. This cute firecracker creates all sorts of tensions in the Tendo house, providing lots of hilarious moments. (view spoiler)[ Poor P-Chan! (hide spoiler)] I really like Shampoo and don't find her to be annoying like some of the other female opponents have been. The ending makes me feel sad for her, but I don't think we've seen the last of her yet. I've read this series so long ago that I can't remember what happens next, but I'd love Shampoo and Ryoga to hook up. These volumes get better with each installment. Just when you think it couldn't get any funnier, Rumiko Takahashi gives you even more belly-laughing-aches. This series is perfection. It's funny, full of action, and filled with sweet moments that stick with you. Love Ranma ½!

3rd volume in this epic old skool comedy manga series. This is very much a volume of two halves. Ryoga dries off and becomes himself, drenches Ranma and claims her as his partner to win the cup for himself - so he's playing to win himself! Hilarity ensues. So-so arc, its fun, but not one of my favourites. The ice rink is of course a frozen swimming pool so there's plenty of cold water to be had for shape changing confusion! Its the second story where this comes into its own with the introduction of one of my all time favourite characters - dumb Amazon Shampoo. Back in China Ranma and his dad ate the first prize of a martial arts competition. Shampoo who had been set to win it was furious and challenged female Ranma to combat. Ranma won. Shampoo gave her the kiss of death which involves following her enemy to the ends of the Earth for a fight to the death - thus explaining her sudden appearance. Male Ranma fights her and wins. Bad move. Any male opponent who beats an amazon has to marry her. So Shampoo is in love with male ranma and wants to kill female ranma. She also gives Akane the kiss of death, fights her, wins and causes Akane to get amnesia with her magic hair washing amnesia shampoo. Absolutely hilarious and one of the funniest mangas I've read. The artwork is very old skool and basic, but it suits the story. the plot is nuts! the characters are nuts! Original and cry out loud funny. Love it!

The first part of this volume continues from the rather soporific sub-story involving the ice rink competition. I was not interested in seeing Ryoga and Ranma fight over Akane. What I found interesting was the second part of this book. Shampoo is introduced: she is a girl who wishes to kill female Ranma and marry male Ranma. I love the Shampoo storyline because it means that Ranma and Akane's true feelings show when there are obstacles in the way of their engagement, even if I do not really like Ranma and Shampoo. Why not? I guess Ranma is not so much a likeable character as the young woman he is to wed. Maybe some of this wasn't so great, but the story remains interesting enough for now, and I hope I can read every volume and discover if Ranma and Akane do fall for one another.

It could just be that this is the first one I ever got, but this one is unquestionably my favorite in the series -- at least the first half. You get some really, really juicy Ranma-and-Akane drama in the Martial Arts Figure Skating match -- and when Shampoo erases all of Akane's memories of Ranma, he starts to realize how he feels about her, even though he won't admit it for, like, a thousand more volumes. Ugh. So we finished the ice skating plot arc and then there was the chinese girl who can't speak well and of course she likes male ranma and hates female ranma. I guess that's a welcome change from the normal I want to kill male ranma and I've fallen in love with female ranma. Again, kinda repetitive.
