I think I've mentioned the high quality of the notes in this series previously, but I have to share this one (although not in full, because I'm too lazy to copy it all): In modern times, this poem is most frequently seen on the pictures of the Seven Gods of Fortune's treasure ship that people place under their pillows on New Year's Eve to invite good dreams. In Japanese, the poem is also a palindrome [...] like any good Japanese poem worth its salt, it is packed with wordplay and multiple meanings. The Japanese poem reads as follows: Nakaki yo na Toono nefuri no Mina mesame Naminori fune no Oto no yaki kana The first thing worth noting for purposes of Noragami is that any time the syllable na shows up, it could mean 'name.' 'Nakaki yo' could mean 'long night,' 'long period of time,' or 'I, the writer of names. I learned more about Japanese poetry, language, and translation from this footnote in a teen maga than I learned from the entire book Ariake. Then she gives two separate version of how the poem could be translated in very different ways: From a distant sleep, through the long expanse of night, all open your eyes. The rich vessel 'pon the waves, how pleasing its silent sound. OR I, writer of names, Call to those brandishing *sound: Hon'rable names, wake. Soundless names have come to fruit. How pleasing these instruments. *Keep in mind that 'sound' also refers to a shinki's instrument name. See that?! There is even an aside footnote inside the endnotes! Way to care about clarifying meaning, author(s).

As one could probably tell by the cover, this has a TON of backstory. It’s a little disconcerting how much backstory was included. Most of the time we get just a few pages, but not this time around. Because of the length and story in the backstory, it began to drag. Noragami before this volume was really good at pacing and keeping the reader’s interest. It was fairly interesting but some parts of the volume just weren’t my cup of tea.

I feel like Hiyori learning all this info from a dream/ somehow tapping into Yato's memories was pretty convenient, but I kind of liked that we learned it all through a flashback. It was easier and smoother this way. Yato, the demon child, what a cutie! I love the characters that act all carefree, but are hiding a tragic backstory. It makes me want to care for them more. Damn so the God's Greatest Secret is the shinki's true name... So if Yukine finds out his real name-hopefully he won't, will he lose the name given to him, "Yukine"? But really, I hope this doesn't happen to him. And I feel like Hiyori is gaining too much knowledge of everything, this can put Yato and Yukine in serious danger. Hiyori sees some of Yato’s past memories; of their father & how he names Yato & gives her Mizuchi—Nora. But there’s another soul Yato meets, Sakura, & he makes her his Shinki and she’s horrified with his lack of morals & especially when he uses her to kill a person - and he’s kept her a secret from his father & Nora (Hiro) - Sakura teaches him morals and kindness but his father wants him & Hiro to kill people like they always have & he’s confused and uncertain - but one day, he’s with Hiro & Sakura finds them - & Hiro asks Sakura if she’s never wondered about her past, her life, her real name - & Yato knew it all when he named her & he feels like he can’t tell her but Hiro says that father said it’s okay to tell Sakura - so he does & she turns into a monster—ayakashi?? And Hiyori wakes up from these memories & realizes a god’s greatest secret is the real name of his Shinki :O So what Yato told Yukine earlier about his dad was just to keep Yukine away from this truth.

We get a couple of revelations in this volume. One of them being what the gods’ secret really is, but also relating to that, we get to see Yato’s past. When he was a kid he was taught horrible things, because he was made to be a certain type of god that he’s rebelling against now. Seeing a kid killing people will always be a terrible image, especially when done gleefully, ugh. Horrifying. Even worse when you already love the character. Seeing him start to learn that other people don't find killing good, and when he wants so bad to make people happy, is so sweet though. I don’t see how his father is ever going to be seen as a good character in any way, and I really hope that doesn’t happen. What he did to Yato, and how he treated Hiiro as well. There’s no coming back from that. I’ve said this before, but I love how this series can have such serious moments, but so smoothly mix in some humor to lighten it up. Like when Yato finds out that Hiyori and his father know each other, and went to the amusement park together? Hilarious. This series is just excellent, and I’m kind of obsessed with it at this point. I can’t wait for the next one.

A bit of a slower volume, but the impact it had on me was absolutely unmatched so far. Yato is one of the most well written character I have ever come across, and I just love him so much. Also I love how the author manages to mix in traditional beliefs with this modern retelling. I'm learning so many new japanese myths with this manga and I adore it, I think it flows so well with the story. This manga is truly incredible.

The introduction of the "God's secret" really spices up Yukine and Yato's relationship as a whole. However, I really wanted to learn more about Hiyori's state and how she was able to go through Yato's memories when he was knocked out. Sakura, Yato's vessel when he was younger, was a great addition to explaining how Yato began to have feelings for other people and start doing good deeds. I really love the emotional aspect as well when Yato began having an interest in people due to Sakura. The relationship between Yato and Hiyori strengthens which adds to the romantic chapter in Volume 11 when they were at the amusement park. The illustrations will always be the greatest part of Noragami due to its ability to capture emotion and action throughout the battles they are faced.

4.5 stars. Little Yato's booby grab knocked half a star off. Don't get me wrong, I'm for booby grabbing as much as the next person. Here, it was unnecessary and didn't make sense. He was a very young child. Why would he have any kind of innate instinct to do that? But the artwork in this volume is stunningly beautiful. And the story? It's lovely and heartbreaking and I can't wait to read the next one. 4.5 stars. Little Yato's booby grab knocked half a star off. This volume was effectively Yato's entire backstory from when he was much younger as well as his relationship with Father. It was interesting and I liked learning more about the God's Secret, but at the same time I wish we didn't need to dedicate an entire volume to it. That being said, this wasn't a bad volume and I did like learning more about gods and shinki, though Mizuchi can go fucking drown in a river for all I care. For whatever reason, I know I read through 16 but goodreads doesn't reflect that, so I'm going back to read 12-16 again and make it official. I really love this series. It's playful and ominous and mythological and beautiful and engrossing. This volume was definitely on the plot development, dark past side, rather than the lighter joyjoy kind. Gooooood stuff.
