This is so bittersweet. I've loved starting out each year with the release of a new book in this series. MJ is one of my favorite characters, and I'm really going to miss her. I have to say I am bummed that this is the last one of this series. Ever since I stumbled across one in the library not realizing it was a series I have been hooked. Just like that, another Ghostbust completed by MJ Holiday! Although this is the last book in the series, it's not the last Ghost Hunter mystery I'll be reading! As always this book was so much fun to read and sometimes really makes me wish I was a paranormal investigator too...Maybe! Although I did find that the climax ended a bit too suddenly for about 240 pages of build up, it was still a great ending with a lot of action jammed into those few pages. I will always highly recommend this series to anyone, who like me loves all things to do with ghosts both good and bad. These books aren't masterpieces and I would never claim they were, BUT they are so much fun! To me they kind of feel like a warm hug on a cold day and trust me once you start one of these books, you won't be able to put it down!

Knowing that this was the last book in the series raised my expectations. That's no spoiler either since Victoria Laurie said her thanks and good-byes as the book began. The ghoul busters became wildly popular during the thirteen episodes of Ghoul Getters. So much so that they filmed a movie. The opening night was almost upon them, and a museum very near their homes was holding an exhibit of various artifacts and curios new and old. Who you ask? The Ghoul Getters consisted of M.J. Holliday, Heath Whitefeather, and Gilley Gillespie. They met a few years back when M.J. and Heath appeared on a pilot show about haunted possessions. Little did they know that the worst spook they came across making that show and his unfriendly demon would end up housed via a portable portal to the lower realms in a dagger sealed with the magnetized material the Ghoul Getters favored to catch spooks. While each of the three were paid well for the movie, Gil got less since he was a bit less active in the ghoul chasing. Therefore, when a so-called producer from the show called and asked Gilley if he could put the dagger on display at the museum, Gilley said yes for more money to be paid to him only. He protected the dagger with magnets all over that museum. What Gilley didn't know was that something was seriously wrong with the magnets, equipment, and special clothing used while ghoul hunting. The spook and demon housed in the dagger got out and began terrorizing people at the exhibit at the museum. While they had the portal open, many other spooks sealed in the lower realms by M.J. or Heath also got out and began attacking as well. It was at this point of the book that I think better reference could have been made tying these ghouls to the "episodes" or books in which they had appeared. Even a list of demons and the books they'd been in would have helped when the name dropping began. I have read all nine books up until now, some twice, and I still don't know who the ghoul was that they kept referring to in connection with Gilley. The others I remembered. Any newcomer to the series at book three and beyond lost a part of the references in this tenth book. Victoria Laurie did try to compensate for this by connecting us to earlier episodes, but since the book titles differed from any description of its ghouls, there was no way to go back to a specific book to review what happened. I finally went back to all nine and read their descriptions to get my mind straight on who was who. I even read this book twice! A new character was unbelieving in ghouls at first. She even shot at one, hitting a Ghoul Getter instead. She went for her gun often since she was an outstanding officer on the Boston Police Department. She was a true believer by book's end and could possibly be groomed to start a new series. Otherwise Gilley, Heath, and M.J. have ended their ghoul-busting careers. They will be missed. Hopefully their friend Abby Cooper will drop a message or update on them from time to time.

Laurie wraps everything up nicely amidst the escalating horrors of M.J., Heath, and Gilley's final bust. Horrors could be an understatement. Demons and spooks from past busts are brought through an extremely powerful portal via an artifact Gilley loaned to a museum in Boston. It’s one of the most bizarre and scary busts they’ve encountered. It takes a one-on-one with a powerful spook for Detective Chris Olivera to come around to their claims of the danger that’s about to be unleashed unless they take action. Like, NOW. Not too much time passed before I began to like Olivera and her willingness to help while putting her career on the line. Revisiting Ayden MacDonald was a pleasant surprise as well. You’ll remember him from their San Francisco “adventure.” What more can I say that I haven’t said in past reviews about M.J., Heath, and Gilley and their terrifying busts? They've felt like friends to me. I’ve loved being a part of their travels and terrors, from afar, of course. This has been an intense, thrilling, and spine-chilling series with much romance, and lots of humor peppered throughout. I’m sad to say good-bye, but I’m anxious to see what Laurie has on tap for her readers next. She promises we’ll love it! -- CONNIE

A great ending to one of my favorite mystery series. If you haven't read other M.J. Fitting end to a great series. I actually teared up a few times while reading this. This is one of my favorite series and I am sad to see the end. Outside of a few new personal changes in the character's lives, this book felt like a re-run or an overview of all the previous books. She was the first author I read in the genre I would dub as Paranormal Mystery or Cozy Paranormal Mystery, because they are Cozy Mysteries! The Ghost Hunter Mystery series became a fast favorite, because GHOSTS!! And mystery of course! A Ghoul’s Guide to Love and Murder is the final mystery of M.J., Gilley, and Heath and I am sad to see them go! Things have been busy for M.J. First she and Heath just got back from an epic vacation only to find the crazy chaos that was waiting for them. Gilley had lent a very powerful dagger to a museum that was showcasing all the Ghoul Getters gear for the upcoming movie premiere that tells of their harrowing journey battling the Grim Widow. Since this is the very powerful dagger that acted as a gateway to letting in a super creepy ghost and his pet demon, M.J. has always kept it locked away but when she hears that Gilley lent it out all willy nilly, she is determined to get it back before the ghost or its demon break free. And that, naturally, is when the dagger is stolen! I’ve had a deep love for this series ever since I started it wayyy back at the beginning. I remember always saving these mysteries for a day off because I was always able to devour them in one day. Sadly, that hasn’t happened in a while what with working full time now, but I still enjoy them all the same! This final one was absolutely amazing! It was like a throwback read and reunion all tied in one! Not only do we see some familiar faces, or hear them, we also get a few familiar ghouls popping back up as well! It was the ultimate kind of reunion! The one you never wanted to attend either! I still cannot believe that this is the end of M.J.’s adventures! It’s been such a blast! All the times I’ve shared with her, Heath, and especially Gilley! It’s been a whirlwind of fun! As always, Gilley is there to make me laugh, but his character did surprise me a few time in this one. You can really see the characters heading off in their own directions to get towards their happy ending. But since M.J. does coexist in the same universe as Abby, I will always holdout for more appearances from her in that realm. Especially with all the things that were happening just as this story wrapped up. The mystery was solved and everything was grand, naturally, but there were still personal dealings that I really wanted to see happen, such as Gilley’s wedding! I mean, come on! The guy had it all planned out and I would’ve loved to seen it in an epilogue! Back to the mystery element of the story, I thought it was done impeccably well, like all Victoria’s mysteries have been! We have just the right amount of creepy and dangerous combined. And that always makes for an excellent read in my book! Especially when we have Gilley overreacting with fear, because, seriously, this is creepy happenings. I totally don’t blame the guy, some of the time at least! The gathering of ghosts were super creepy, especially that widow. She was seriously freaky! And to basically have the baddest of the bad teaming together to wreak revenge on M.J. and her crew, you know things are going to be intense. And naturally, along with M.J., I totally didn’t pin our bad guy down at all! I wasn’t without a few tears as well as I read this last adventure. There were moments where you knew we were seeing the prelude to goodbye. It was heart-wrenching to say the least because I am terrible at goodbyes. My only issue was truly with when we exited the group. Things had just wrapped up, and we had all these surprises popping up during the book that I would’ve liked to seen come into fruition but sadly we end things just as the mystery was wrapped up. And since the book is now a year old, I fear that even a short story is out of the question that will show these lingering happenings coming into fruition. Though I am very behind in Abby’s series, so perhaps if I get caught up with her I might be able to learn what happened through a phone call, or maybe a surprise visit! One can always hope since these two series coexist in the same world! If you have yet to read any of Victoria’s mysteries I would highly recommend them! They are just amazing! They both are the perfect blend of mystery and paranormal and of course there’s still the added humor and sporadic bout of romance! Neither one of these is a series to be missed because they each are amazing and of course, GREAT reads! Overall Rating 4.75/5 stars—just a wee bit off the top because I REALLY wanted to see a few of those unmentionable things happen but they were apparently too far off in the future. But like I said, I still hold out on hope of possibly seeing or hearing about it later on in Abby’s series!

Well technically this book and the series are well written. So they get four stars for that. But the main characters are so annoying I can't in good conscience give it five. Long black hair with that perfect streak of white brought on by not age, but his experience in ghost busting. Muscles. Gorgeous. Every woman stops and admires him. He's also smart, brave, and he's got that romanticized Native American heritage! Just the perfect package. (Ugh) Gilley is the stereotypical GBF (Gay Best Friend). And I hate what he's turned into for this series. He's whiney, scared of ghosts (so being in the ghost busting profession he provides loads of laughs at his expense), a drama queen, addicted to sweets, and kind of dumb (despite the narrater trying to tell the reader otherwise with his tech skills, he makes dumb, selfish choices - like the one that lands them in hot water in this book). Oh, and because he's gay that now means he likes to cross dress. So. Otherwise the story is entertaining. I love the ghost busting aspect of the series. The constant feeling that the author is trying to defend herself and her claims to be psychic get a little old (worse in the Abby Cooper stories), but I at least can suspend reality and enjoy the plot. It appears this is the last book in the series - though I'm not sure. It certainly read like it is.

It is a shame there won’t be any more novels in the Ghost Hunter series but there is always a chance we will be able to catch up with them in the crossover Psychic Eye novels at some point. Rating: 5/5 stars, best of 2016

The biggest evolution of the entire Ghoul series happens in this final book. Gilly grows a spine! I never thought the day would come that he stand up and fight instead of running and screaming. The return of former characters was a great suprise.   The biggest issue I had is the repetitiveness of the case information. The main characters decribe the same issues to each other and secondary characters on multipe times. There were other instinces as well.   Overall it was a good conclusion to a fun ser The biggest evolution of the entire Ghoul series happens in this final book. Gilly grows a spine! Reread in 2020. A nice ending to the series. This book also explains how Cat and Gilley become friends-a new series is based on them but their friendship wasn’t explained. Original review: This was cute. I liked the earlier books in the series better, but I was happy with the way the author ended the series with this one.
