Gopto is Duane Burghard's first novel, and it's quite the exciting romp. I almost lost a night's sleep to it. I started reading it very late in the evening, and couldn't put it down until I absolutely had to at 3 in the morning. I finished it two days later. The story gets up and sprints from the very first chapter, and it's a page-turner. At 77,000 words, it's not terribly intimidating but not so short as to leaving the reader feeling underserved. I picked up on a number of fun influences in the story: E.T., Battlestar Galactica, Sphere, Close Encounters, WarGames, The Matrix and especially Flight of the Navigator. If you're a fan of any of these films, you'll find much to enjoy here. The writing style is upbeat, energetic and not freighted with a lot of serious military techno-talk. Just strong personalities driving the story forward, working their own angles and motivations. The story opens up unexpected new horizons in the third act, which strongly hint at future sequels. I hope they are coming soon. Disclosure: Duane is a personal friend (he did not provide me a copy of the book to review). I've known Duane for many years and I know him to be an avid and rigorous fan of science fiction. Not only does he enjoy the genre for its imaginative stories, he also can't help being drawn into the themes and philosophical ideas they present. Sit down with him and start him talking about one of his favorite shows, movies or books and he will impress you with the depth of his insights and the granularity of detail that he's attuned to. I really enjoyed the exuberance of Gopto's story, characters and writing style because I can see Duane having a lot fun in a science fiction sandbox of his own making, and I can tell that he is only getting started. Expect to see more creative and vivacious storytelling from Duane in the years to come.

I really enjoyed this book. The story of Gopto is really not as much about an alien but rather about our government programs regarding aliens. This is fiction but I can see something like this story being realistic, but of course covered up by the government.

This was a wonderful book, I'm amazed that this is a first effort. It has what I love - humor, varied pacing, surprises, and some escape artist action! The main characters are compelling, the bad guys are obnoxious, and the hero is brave. Or maybe heroes? I won't spoil anything; suffice to say you will like it from the curious opening to the well-wrapped-up ending. Now we wait for another book from Mr. Burghard!
