Baron's vast, isolated ranch is only one of his many attractions, but he's awfully domineering and she can't possibly give in to their growing attraction while she's virtually his prisoner, can she? Baron sees the situation differently. Forced to drop his geology career and take over the family ranch, he's frustrated by too many people saying no to him. Isn't he in charge? Why is Addie so mysterious about her past and her commitments to another man? Why won't she give in to Baron, when every time they touch, they catch fire? It's a battle of wills—with neither one backing down. Addie can tame the wildest stallion, but taming her own growing attraction to the high-handed rancher and keeping him from breaking through her defenses requires all her strength—and some help from unexpected sources. Praise for Captive of the Cattle Baron from the judges of the Touch of Magic Contest: "Full of life and real people with distinct, believable voices and personalities." "Love your voice! This was so easy to read. I love it when the author disappears and the story comes to life. Few are able to carry that off well—you have that talent." "Enjoyed the read! You have a great story!" From the judges of The Write Stuff Contest: "Addie’s likeable and she’s acting in a believable manner, so good job there." "The dialogue is quite natural and compelling. Great job!" "I loved the premise of the story." "Your opening scene was great! I love how it started with your two characters meeting each other in not the best circumstances." "I love your characters; both have something they need to redeem in different ways." "From your voice, to your characters, and plot you have an amazing story here." "Great western feel and classic fish out of water story." From the judges of the Emily Contest: "I think you’re a truly talented writer." "I like that you got right into the story, introducing the characters and giving the readers enough back story to pique their curiosity." "Great story. Congratulations!" "It was very clear that Baron and Addie would be an excellent match (beyond their initial physical attraction)." "Very good! Very intriguing and likeable characters. I would totally go horseback riding with Addie."

I've been reading this series out of order as each book works as a stand-alone. But, I have met these characters in other books so I'm aware of where their story goes. As a result, my review is a bit biased in that I know their future. A mentally unstable cowboy and a child actress who has moved on to a life outside of Hollywood are the main characters. I found them both complete and interesting. There are very good sub-plots and several other very interesting characters. I didn't enjoy the violence. I know from her other books that Irene is very good at helping her readers understand the causes and affects of stress on the mind but some of that was missing in this book. Regardless, I couldn't put the book down and am looking forward to reading more in this series.

Addie Jelleff jumped from the frying pan and into the raging inferno that was Baron Selkirk. Being a hideaway isn’t like in the movies, and Addie a former child star turned horse whisperer should know. There is a fine line between protecting and being a kidnapper and Baron seems to be crossing both lines, although Addie would say he turned warden on her at his secluded ranch in the middle of nowhere. Granted, Baron is less than hospitable, but in his twisted way he believes he is saving Addie from a life of drug addiction and who knows what else. When Adie tries the truth, he shuts her down, but because of some juicy tidbits from his family and employees, Addie sees that to divulge her past to her captor could mean she will never get back to civilization and a very important trial she must attend. Although a beastly host, there is something about the knuckle-dragging cowboy that Addie cannot deny is appealing. Sparks are going off between them like skyrockets, but his last insane move to keep her at his ranch could have a deadly result. Only rescue from unlikely allies can get Addie her freedom and to the court on time. Irene Vartanoff’s Captive of the Cattle Baron is very well written, has a great flow with dialogue that runs from humorous to downright brutal, completely spot on for realism. Her characters are a bit different though, Addie is a strong-willed woman who verbally is Baron’s match, but her bosom heaving attraction to her captor is a little scary. Baron is unhappy with his current lot in life, and selfishly is taking it out on everyone around him, including Addie. What sparks their physical desires? I will agree that Irene Vartanoff did a wonderful job with her special blend of spice and heat, loved it, actually, but the bond forming between these two seemed a little uncomfortable for me. She is keeping secrets, he is keeping secrets, she has no reason to be ashamed of her past and he has been severely damaged by his. Because of Irene Vartanoff’s way with words, I look forward to more in this series that will hopefully give us more face time with some of the characters, but I do hope the characters will be more emotionally stable. But then, this is love and love knows no limits. 3.5 stars I received this copy from Irene Vartanoff in exchange for my honest review. Captive of the Cattle Baron is the prequel to the Selkirk Family Ranch series and it was interesting to get to know Baron and his sister Tess, along with her best friend, Paula, Miss Betty the Selkirk's housekeeper, and Addie who is being held captive by Baron after a chance meeting and some strange events. She has lots of secrets and he's making a lot of bad assumptions due to someone in his past who still seems to be messing with his head. There are a lot of twists and turns to the story and Baron is definitely holding Addie captive for her own good, or is he? He may have strong armed her a time or two but never mistreated her physically or sexually. But that doesn't mean he didn't do everything he could for her not to leave the ranch. If Addie had not kept him in the dark about her life, would things have turned out differently? I loved the scenic descriptions of Wyoming and their ranch and the inclusion of the horses. Watching Addie in her element as horse whisperer was endearing. Baron has demons he's wrestling with but will Addie be the one to soothe the savage beast? There is nice closure especially with the epilogue and I can't wait to read more in this series especially since I inadvertently read the fourth book in the series, Runaway Rancher, first! Ms. Vartanoff is a fairly new to me author since I've only read two of her books previously. I do plan to rectify that and have added several of her books to my always growing TBR pile since I enjoy reading cowboy romances.

Nope. 1.5 stars I did not like this book at all. It is NOT a romance book at all. If the author thinks This is love? She needs therapy. This book is about a man who has mental issues. Then, then she blames her career as an actor when she was a CHILD. I am giving this a 1.5 star only because of the editing.
