Having read the first book, Southern Heat, and really liked the characters, I couldn’t wait to meet them again and see what calamity they fell into this time. Let me introduce you to the main character, Brack Preston. Let me introduce you to the main character, Brack Preston. He’s an Afghanistan War veteran, a man of independent means after inheriting his uncles estate, which includes a little cottage with a million dollar view of the ocean and a ramshackle bar, the Pirate’s Cove. His best and most loyal companion is his dog, Shelby. Next is his friend Mutt, owner of a rundown bar in the bad part of Charleston. You’ll also get to know Brother Thomas, a preacher as big as a grizzly with the heart of a teddy bear, until you get him riled up. There’s also Darcy Coates, a reporter and friend who helped solve his uncles murder and took a bullet for it. Her and Brack do a two step around their feelings. Maybe this time we’ll see where that goes. From the gritty digs of poverty to the glitz of affluence, Brack butts heads, stirs up several hornet’s nests, and dodges bullet. He can’t walk away when a girl takes a bullet for him. Especially when her body disappears. Brother Thomas asks him to dig into it, and along with Mutt, Darcy, and a few old and new friends, you get dragged along, thrown in front of bullets, enter neighborhoods the police won’t even venture into, and race around in some very expensive cars. What charms me with both of these books is Brack’s affection for his dog, Shelby. When things get dicey, he has one person he trusts to take care of the dog. And he always finds time to spend with him until it’s safe to bring him home again. Friends say Shelby is his chick magnet. I can see that. There’s more than one plot in this story. Someone is trying to kill Brack. Someone is always trying to do that, it seems. And his bar is being sabotaged. As you get closer to the end of the book, it all comes together. And I was truly surprised by the actual killer. The character never stood out and the motive was as old as time. Should have thought of that. Another winner in this series and I can only hope it continues. I received this book for my honest review.

Brack is back and this time Burnsworth takes him down an even darker part. I won't tell any of the happenings of the book for fear of spoilers, but I will say that we get a lot more of Mut and Brother Thomas (and Shelby!). Brother Thomas was already my favorite character and this new book solidifies it. Burnsworth has a knack for digging into the culture and dark side of a still beautiful and charming Southern town. Charleston feels more real, thanks to David Burnsworth. Brack is back and this time Burnsworth takes him down an even darker part. If you like to watch good mystery shows on television, you'll like David Burnsworth's book, Burning Heat. It's the second book in his Brack Pelton Mystery series but it works well as a stand alone. This book is 283 pages of action. When he leaves his friend Mutt's rundown bar, he stumbles upon a domestic dispute between a man and a woman that quickly escalates to the murder of the woman. Brack saves the woman's eight year old sister, but the next day the little girl returns and wants Brack to investigate her sister's murder. Brack is determined to find the killer even though the person is bringing heat upon his bar and life, so he teams up with an unlikely assortment of people and his loyal companion, Shelby, his dog, in a dangerous game of cat and mouse throughout the seedy section of Charleston. Author David Burnsworth weaves a fast-paced and suspenseful tale that follows Brack's investigative journey as it takes him all over Charleston in search of the killer. The reader is easily drawn into this well written story with its richly descriptive plot and setting, it is filled with enough action and unsuspecting twists and turns that takes the reader on one hell of a thrilling roller coaster ride. As a fan of Southern fiction and a frequent visitor to Charleston and the surrounding lowcountry areas, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thrilling mystery. I was intrigued by Brack and his motley crew of sidekicks. I loved Brack's gritty nature and sarcastic attitude, and I found myself cheering for him and his crazy team of helpers as they embarked on another dangerous adventure. With an intriguing cast of characters; witty dialogue and dramatic interactions; and a richly descriptive setting that makes a person want to visit the picturesque city of Charleston, its historic landmarks, and the surrounding lowcountry areas; Burning Heat is a classic Southern noir mystery novel that is a must read! Dollycas’s Thoughts This is a book I have been waiting impatiently for since I finished the author’s first book Southern Heat back in May of last year. Burnsworth set the bar high with that one and the good news is he matched it with this one. Brack Pelton is a former race car driver and an Afghanistan War veteran who has had a life full of drama, he lost his wife to cancer and anger was taking over so he enlisted with a death wish. He made it back but is emotionally and physically scarred by the experience. He is back just in time to witness his uncle’s death and as his only heir inherits a rundown bar called the Pirate’s Cove. He tracks his uncle’s killer in the first book. This time the story opens as he sees a man hitting a woman and a little girl watching on and when he intervenes the woman is shot. Brack takes off with the little girl while bullets are flying. When the police arrive on the scene the woman’s body is missing. Brack and all the other characters we met in Southern Heat are again brought together to find the woman or her body and catch the man who shot her. I learned from the first book, which was amazingly David Bursworth’s first published mystery novel, that when you start reading you are not going to stop reading until you finish it. So I planned accordingly and that is just what happened. The action starts on page 1 and takes us to some dark places, some creepy places and some scary places. The story continues at a very fast pace as Brack investigates and continues to put himself in and others in dangerous situations. He is also on edge because someone is sabotaging his business, a break in and liquor license issues are just the tip of the iceberg. I should also mention he is quite a “player” with at least 3 women vying for his attention. The story is full of flawed characters trying to do the right things. It also has a crazy group of villains. And a wonderful 50 pound mixed breed dog named Shelby. All the characters are so well written. Easy to imagine and see clearly. Easy to root for or hate. Burning Heat has a tight plot that is thrilling and suspenseful and so much fun to read. Brack Pelton is definitely one of the good guys and I loved taking this edge of our seat journey with him. I hope he invites us along again soon.

Review originally appeared on Brooke Blogs. Burning Heat by David Burnsworth is the second book in the Brack Pelton series. I quickly found myself drawn into Brack Pelton’s world again. I love the characters and the setting. The author’s writing style is authentic. I didn’t want to put this one down once I started it. This is a wonderful second book in a series and it is a series that I look forward to reading more in. I received an early copy in exchange for my honest review. My opinion was not influenced in any way.

I have recently read the book Burning Heat by David Burnsworth. It's is an amazing mystery novel. While reading this book you truly get submerged in the story. Although some chapters seemed as though they were just filler and could've been put to much better use. Also, I disliked the character Jon Jon, which in my opinion was the whole purpose of the author giving him the characteristics he possesses. I believe most people would enjoy reading this book. I believe this because it is not only action packed, but has a large amount of mystery involved with it. In my humble opinion I believe this is one of if not the best mystery novels written in the past few years.

I liked this book. Burnsworth is a new author for me. Would have given it a 3.5 if that was possible. But wish I had read the first book in the series first. It is a quick read that reminds me a little of a low country (Charleston) version of a Robert Parker Spencer story (one of my favorite quick reads). I will definitely give this author another chance.

I've been waiting for this one after having read the first book, Southern Heat, two years ago and I wasn't disappointed. I love the non-stop action even if there wasn't as much mystery in this one. But what I really love are the characters because you really feel like you know them. Brack, Darcy, Shelby, Mutt and Brother Thomas are all back and hopefully we'll see them all again soon. I read this book in one day. The intensity of the story keeps you compelled to read until the end. A cast of characters so strong this fast-paced drama will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is a great read for people who love action and a book that will keep you up all night reading.
