Or Jessie could've told Seth that her feelings for Chase were gone the minute they touched lips, even before that! (hide spoiler)] I kept thinking, oh, this is where they'll finally be honest with each other, but no. Extremely frustrating. Add to that there were too many potential love interests for Seth always hovering about. And then there was Chase and Jessie, supposedly a couple for years (yes, Chase is Seth's brother). (view spoiler)[ One an old college love that dumped him, married someone else, divorced, and came back to town. Seth not only takes her out on a date (yes, he didn't call it that, but it was) but hires her at the police station where he's the town sheriff! Didn't like that at all. Jessie has been Chase's girl for years. Even though he's rarely been in town for years performing in rodeos all over the country, and cheating on Jessie with "buckle bunnies" along the way. But he'll sow his wild oats and then come back and marry Jessie? And she puts up with this? And somehow Seth and Jessie feel bad when they get together because of how it will hurt Chase? Daniella's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews Seth and Jessie are an odd couple that work well together. They were fun to read about and watch mature and grow throughout the story. This is one of those books you hate and love at the same time, the kind that makes you want to cry and slap some common sense into some people. This is my first book by Ms. Lillard and I'm already looking forward to the next because this was such an interesting read. She does a great job capturing the complexities of living in a small town and how difficult it can be to live down negative perceptions. Jessie McAllen is Cattle Creek's resident wild child and her on again, off again relationship with Chase Langston is fodder for constant gossip, but Jessie has had enough of both her reputation and Chase's wandering eye and is working on a plan to leave for good. Sheriff Seth Langston has been in love with Jessie for as long as he's known her, but she's his brother's girl and completely off limits, even though he knows his brother does not deserve her. A busted truck and an unexpected kiss lead to surprising revelations and give Seth the opportunity to show Jessie how he really feels about her but what do the dependable, well-loved town Sheriff and the impulsive wild child have in common? How can two people from such different backgrounds find common ground? Will the town ever accept them together and let Jessie live down her reputation? What about Chase? So many questions, so many issues. Jessie and Chase had an uphill battle from the start, between Jessie's insecurities, her relationship with Chase and the gossip and I honestly wasn't feeling the town at all, especially the way they treated Jessie. I liked her because she was never down for long and her fears and issues, when combined with her strengths made her a really remarkable character. Seth was the town hero, but more than that he was a real good man. Caring, protective, steady and really sweet, and exactly what Jessie needed. Ms. Lillard did good with the way she handled potentially messy situations with the characters and while some parts were heartbreaking, there was also some humor to lighten things up. This was an enjoyable read and if the excerpt for the next book is anything to go by, the next installment promises even more drama and I definitely won't miss it. Too bad she has been in love with his brother Chase for, well, forever. Love, marriage, live happily ever after. Not Seth, of course. He will be pining—but that’s the way it goes sometimes, doesn’t it? But hold on, it’s not quite that simple… And that’s where things kind of took a turn as unspoken truths began to drive this quiet drama. A forever love that really isn’t one. A love triangle that really isn’t so shaped. An obvious crime that isn’t so cut and dry. While I enjoyed the characters and the gently humorous antics of a few citizens of Cattle Creek, the tension between Seth and Jessie never hit that emotional high that I was hoping for. The characters were likable—they were nice and all—but the drama between them seemed so…unnecessary. So many unspoken truths on both sides made me want to have a serious talk with each of them, as they couldn’t seem to have that open dialogue themselves. There were many things they had to deal with—dishonesty (even by omission) shouldn’t be one of them… I think some honest conversation would have cut the unnecessary from the story and helped me connect with the characters in a deeper way. Because that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? ~ Diane, 3.5 stars

Jessie McAllen has a reputation in the small Texas town of Cattle Creek as a wild girl. Impulsive, stubborn and comes from a family of women who cause trouble. Jessie works at the local diner/bar and when her man, Chase, comes back into town with another woman, she flips out. She runs to the parking lot for air, and some time later the police show up because Chase's car has been smashed to hell. Everyone turns to Jessie for blame - granted, she is holding a baseball bat. She runs to the parking lot for air, and some time later the police show up because Chase's car has been smashed to hell. Everyone turns to Jessie for blame - granted, she is holding a baseball bat. Chase and Jessie have been an item (more off than on) for years and years and years. Chase is a big playboy. A rodeo guy - let's just say he doesn't have the most respect for Jessie - but they've been together for so long, they don't know how to officially be apart. When the police show up due to Chase's busted up truck, it's Chase's brother Seth, the town's sheriff who takes the call. Seth is very familiar with Jessie, as he has watched the train wreck that is Chase and Jessie for years. But secretly, very, very secretly, Seth has had a crush on Jessie. But knowing she is his brother's girl, he has never made a move. This changes though when Chase takes off to go west, and Jessie very stubbornly refuses to say what really happened the night the truck got smashed. Seth feels protective over her, and now that his brother is out of town, Seth finally makes a move on Jessie. To Jessie's surprise, she becomes smitten with Seth. Seth is a very eligible bachelor, and Jessie watches all the single ladies try to woo him with casseroles. I think she is surprised that Seth goes for her. Jessie's big dream is to save enough money to leave Cattle Creek for good. But a little fun romance with Seth before she leaves presents itself and she decides to go for it. Something else happens which I'll put under a spoiler tag, because it doesn't happen until halfway into the book, but it then becomes the main focus of the book:
The first time Jessie and Seth have sex, she becomes pregnant.
This book has a Maisey Yates feel to it - which is a compliment because I enjoy her books a lot. I liked the self-made, stubborn, feisty Jessie. She has a wild girl persona, but she really isn't. She may have made a bad decision or two, but deep down she just wants people to accept her. Seth is the serious, mature, responsible sheriff. He is very close with his family, and his family has adopted Jessie as she has no one but her elderly grandmother to care for. His family can be overwhelming for Jessie, but she also loves their dynamic. I enjoyed the feel of this small, Texas town. Everyone knows everyone else's business. The police department is super small, so Seth is intimate with the town's members. I even liked how Chase is portrayed - and how Jessie is "his" girl to start the book. Jessie doesn't have a lot of self-esteem, so it made sense to me that she would stay with Chase, even though he used her and was a womanizer. Seth comes along and has much more respect for her - they have nice chemistry and I definitely rooted for them to get together. However, I did feel like after a while Seth railroaded Jessie. He started making decisions for her - telling her he knows what's best for her. And it happened time and time again. That rubbed me the wrong way - Jessie is an adult and maybe because Seth is older or that he thinks she screws up her life too much - he took control instead of having a more equal relationship. Also, when the above spoiler happened it was okay, but not my favorite scenario. The ending was predictable yet there is a grand gesture by Seth that made me smile. I'll definitely read the next one - I think this author has a nice voice. Grade: B-

The local wild child that happens to have an on again off again thing going with his brother--who happens to have a thing for buckle bunnies. Yeah. Toss in a falling out with one brother, an unexpected kiss with the other, one opinionated small town, some heartache and some sweet romance and, whew, it's one messy, bumpy road to a happily ever...but so worth it. I absolutely loved the hero. Seth is an amazingly sweet man who may not have a way with words but puts everything he is into showing the people around him he cares. He's just a good man and left me sighing more than once. And Jessie is his opposite. He's grounded and steady...she's wild and a bit impetuous. And where he's had a solid family supporting him, Jessie has had a lot of family strife and is pretty much on her own. And she broke my heart with it. She has a lot of insecurities and doubts her worth and it was hard seeing her battle that and not fully believe she was good enough for him or that he could ever really love her. She's stubborn and head strong and while that's not always a good thing with Jessie it was part of why I adored her. She's not had it easy but she keeps fighting (even if she's not always fighting quite the right thing). Jessie and Seth were a couple I just wanted to root for so hard! They didn't have an easy romance and their journey together was far from the expected but it was so damn touching watching them try to figure it all out. Their romance was funny, sweet, heartbreaking and could be silly too. From locking her up in his jail--maybe multiple times ::snort::-- to picnics, courting, and dealing with loss and healing. They went through so many things and at times I just didn't see how they'd survive. It was an emotional journey for sure. Not to make it sound all doom and gloom, though. There was plenty of humor and sweetness for them as well. All in all, Lillard put together an unconventional romance that touched the heart and left me sighing. I'm a spot miffed at some of the town for how they treated these two but hopefully they'll win me over in later reads. I do tend to hold a grudge against those who are mean to characters I love so we shall see. We shall see. Regardless...I can't wait to see what will happen in book two. I've already got a thing for the upcoming hero ;)

Loving a Lawman is the first book in Amy Lillard's Cattle Creek series. I LOVED it! Amy writes such a good romance and she had me guessing the outcome of the book from chapter 1. Love, love LOVE this book! One of the best reads of 2016! Chase has gone through, and still going through, countless women while still considering Jessie his. And the whole town, including his brothers and Seth (who is in love with Jessie), believes Jessie is Chase’s and no one will pursue her. Here is where my issue with the book lies, Chase cares nothing for Jessie and shows that by having endless flings and one-night stands with random girls on and off the rodeo circuit and his family and the town thinks it’s okay for him to do this and still claim Jessie as his, even though she’s technically not. I’m sorry, this is inexcusable for me. So Jessie is supposed to wait around for Chase until HE decides he’s ready to settle down. I don’t effing think so. And the worst part is that Jessie is in love with Chase despite all of his carousing and treating her like sh*t. Chase’s family is fine with her being treated that way. It makes me sick. After I read the story: I’m glad I stuck with the story. What I perceived in the beginning was not completely as it seemed. Yes, Chase’s family thought of Jessie as his, despite Chase’s promiscuous ways (which I still had an issue with). But what developed was a multi-faceted story filled with hopeful heartaches and bittersweet blessings. I had issues with the book but at the same time, I absolutely loved the story. I couldn’t put it down and finished it in less than a day! Jessie is a tough woman who’s had to overcome a lot, including the label of town outcast. Seth has loved Jessie for years, but constantly fights his desires because of his brother’s “claim” on Jessie. Their journey was a difficult one, but no less beautiful. I probably sound like a crazy person, but I hated and love the book at the same time. And if a story can evoke this much emotion, it is definitely one that needs to be read! This was my first book by Amy Lillard and although the review was a messy battlefield of emotions, LOVING A LAWMAN is a must-read! ***I was gifted an eBook copy from the publisher via Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions reached are my own***

The story begins when Seth is called to the scene of Chase’s truck being demolished. Everyone seems to believe that Jesse did it, since Chase was fooling around with another girl. Seth brought Jesse to jail, knowing she was innocent, only because she confessed. Afterall, everyone thought it was her anyway. With Chase being a notorious ladies man, constantly disappointing or angering Jesse, Seth decides he will make his move. Everyone in town loves Jesse, as she is the local girl who has lived there all her life. Jesse is disgusted, and decides she will leave town once she saves enough money. She can’t live anymore near Chase and watch his constant philandering. When Seth tries to talk to her, he kisses Jesse and to his surprise, she responds to his kiss. What follows is a slow build romance that will open Jesse’s eyes that she has been looking at the wrong Langston brother all this time. Seth is sweet, caring, a hardworker and he wants Jesse for himself. On a night of passion, Jesse becomes pregnant and Seth is determined to marry her. Jesse finds herself caring more and more about Seth, and finally begins to believe that maybe she can find happiness. A tragedy will occur that will send Jesse on the road to run away. Will Seth be able to stop her? Will he be able to prove that he truly loves her? This was a nice sweet romance, with some surprises along the way. Amy Lillard does a wonderful job keeping our interest throughout, and having us root hard for Seth and Jesse. I loved them together, and kept reading in hope they would find their true happiness. I look forward to the next book in this series, and more about the Langstons. If you love sweet small town romances, I suggest you give Loving a Lawman a try. Barb The Reading Cafe

In the story of Seth and Jessie I couldn't believe that Seth could actually go after his brothers girlfriend but as the story started to unfold it made so much more sense. Without giving too much away Jessie does end up with the right brother but I loved the twists of the story that Lillard incorporated. One minute I wasn't really liking the heroine and in the next I was like if I was Jessie I would be telling some people where to go. Jessie is a heroine that got the short end of the stick in many ways but her character and personality just stood out! Seth was omg sweet as pie and from the moment the story begins, you could see how deep his love went for Jessie. I honestly really loved how these two got together and how much I wanted them to be together. Of course in any romance you have some drama or tragedy but this story has both. It's not over the top or annoying but it really helped make the story so much better and realistic in my eyes. There were moments when I was in total shock and then in tears. Like I mentioned before I am really hoping this is the start of a new series because these brothers sound totally delicious and cattle creek sounds like a great place to visit.

There's love triangle, surprise pregnancy, small-town gossips, unresolved crime that everything seemed to be underdeveloped. While I love Seth as he is, being a noble man and all the things, he was more of a thinker than a doer. He spent so much time going over things in his head instead of actually showing Jessie his true feelings. Jessie, on the other hand, was kind of hard to get in the beginning. I was having a hard time connecting with her character because of her actions. The sudden turnaround of events because of her impulsiveness didn't work for me. I was expecting more moments of Seth and Jessie together being happy but it was short-lived; I was hoping for more. And though the story wasn't so bad, I didn't feel anything romance at all between the two characters. Maybe because there was so much going on? Or I missed something? Or it should be somehow deeper? I didn't get the ~high~ emotions I usually feel when I read romance.

I felt bad for Jessie and all the struggles, tragedies and loss she has experienced in her young life. But she has a stubborn streak that wouldn't let her give up. I really liked Seth, he is a down-to-earth kind of guy and tries to do the right thing. Loving A Lawman has a good story-line with some twists and turns, unexpected developments, tragedies and love. There are a couple “bedroom” scenes that I skipped over and the cursing made this hard for me to read and enjoy (3 ½ stars). ~I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher via GoodReads (no monetary gain were exchanged), this is my honest review~

Overall I thought this was a great love story. It did take me about a chapter or two to get into the storyline, however once I reached that point I was hooked. I couldn't wait to see how the storyline of Seth and Jessie was going to play out and how Chase would fit into the picture. Amy did a great job in writing Seth's part. His internal struggle to keep his feelings for what everyone considers his "brother's girl" was so sweet and yet frustrating to read! I understand that he felt loyalty to his brother Chase, but Chase didn't really treat Jessie like he should have. Instead he was constantly on the road with several women it seemed. Poor Jessie with her stubbornness and pride, didn't seem to want to change her circumstances. I loved seeing this sweet romance blossom. Although the circumstances were not the best, I enjoyed seeing the real man in Seth come out. The caring, nurturing, loving and protective Seth that was hidden underneath that quiet yet rough exterior. I just hope we get to see more of his in the next installment!! I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the author in exchange for an honest review which I have written.

I really liked the book! it was certainly different than what I'm used to reading and I most definitely skipped the bedroom scenes (sorry Amy). But overall, the characters were certainly well developed and I loved the cover of the book. I like Jessie because in a way she reminds me of me if that makes any sense. I loved her stubborn streak but I also loved her sensitive side as well. Seth was equally determined. I like a man who admits he's wrong and tries to make it right! I came from a small town so I know what it's like. Everyone knows your business before you do! that's really the only thing I don't like about a small town. There were some parts that I laughed at and wanted to cry because I can relate to Jessie so much. I just wonder sometimes about ppl why it takes them so long to appreciate what's right in front of them! Thanks Amy for a wonderful story. I will read this again. You truly made Seth and Jessie come alive. I can almost see them in a movie!! I received a copy of this book from Amy Lillard in exchange for an honest review

I found myself right in the middle between the main characters, as I kept walking in both of their shoes, I watched the light come on Seth when he sees the little children at his nieces birthday, but Jessie pulled on my heart strings, and actually so did her poor grandmother. These two don’t seem to realize what they are experiencing, each lost in the thought of brother Chase, but will they wake up in time to find the happiness they deserve? There are some big bombshells about to fall, and some sweet happenings, but will it be enough to bring and keep these two together? I received this book through the Author, and was not required to give a positive review.

What a read! You will not want to put this book down! I love Amy Lillard’s Amish fiction books. This is the first non-Amish I’ve read by her and I loved it too. Chase Langston is supposed to be Jessie’s boyfriend. He’s always away on the Rodeo circuit and doesn’t really have time for her. She’s loved him since they were children…or, does she really? She’s always been known as Chase’s girl. Chase’s older brother sheriff Seth Langston has loved Jessie for a long time but, out of respect for his brother, wouldn’t let on. Read this story of unrequited love, or is it? This is a story about overcoming your upbringing, loyalty, heartache, love and passion. You’ll love the characters and want to see more of them.

Absolutely breathtaking. I love pretty much anything and everything to do with cowboys so I have to say seeing Amy start a cowboy series was incredibly exciting to me. It did not disappoint! If you do not fall in love with Sheriff Seth Langston then you must be made of stone. I adored him and Jessie. I loved the chemistry between them. My one tiny complaint is that the "bedroom" scenes were a bit too descriptive for my tastes but they did not take away from the story. I highly enjoyed it! The ba Absolutely breathtaking. I am especially excited to see what she does in Chance's book ;) CANNOT WAIT FOR MORE!

When I first started reading this book, I didn't think that I was going to like it. Right away the reader is thrust into the middle of a scene from the hero's perspective, which was different. But a few pages in the characters began to intrigue me and I wanted to learn more about them. By the end of the book, I was in love with these characters and didn't want it to end! I'm looking forward to the next book, and the next Langston brother. Full review to come... When I first started reading this book, I didn't think that I was going to like it. Loving a Lawman By Amy Lillard I enjoyed reading this story. So much went into this book. There many interesting situations that Seth and Jessie had to experience. Then ending surprised me and I was happy about it. Even through wealth the Langstroms turned out to be good people. I highly recommend you to read this story. On the whole it is realistic. Amy Lillard has a unique gift of writing. Read it in two days as it was one book I couldn’t lay down for very long.

This was a nice western romance. The story kept me interested and I loved the characters. The Langston family is a great set of characters. I really like how Jessie is such a strong character. She has much to overcome and a love to get over. I received an ebook copy of this book from netgalley for a fair and honest opinion.
