Updated Review - I notice that I don't gravitate towards this book when I plan my meals for upcoming weeks. I don't find them as exciting as I initially thought so I'm changing my rating to three stars for personal preference. The recipes are a bit on bland side and I prefer mine meals with a bit of kick in flavour. I thought her first book was okay but I love this second book. The recipes are simple, easy, and reasonable amount of ingredients hence right up my alley. If you have been following my reviews, you may have noticed that I've recently been ploughing through heaps of cookbooks as part of my research for my upcoming cooking course (alright it's really because I have an irrational love of cookbooks). Before I review this book, it might be worth giving a little background into how I compare/experience cookbooks. I came across a discussion recently (maybe with Adam Gopnik?) that looked at the different types of cookbooks that's similar to how I break them down too. Some of reference tomes (Harold Mcgee for instance), some focus on technique (typically the ones from famous cooking schools), some are by famous chefs or celebrities, some tell good stories (see my review of Mamushka), some go into detail about nutrition or cooking for a dietary restriction (one of the best I've come across is "how can it be gluten-free" by America's Test Kitchen) and so on. I tend to look at how I feel a particular book stands out within the category/categories (some span more than one) that is likely to be its objective(s). And this book is roughly a healthy/clean eating (these books often have a before-after author story). And (ahem) some cookbooks I think are helped by the author being attractive! This is not to disparage Ella's work or story but it's hard to imagine that her blog/book would be as successful if she were a, for want of a better word, minger. This book has lots of attractive pictures of food (and a much higher percentage of the author than the standard cookbook). The recipes that I've tried were fine (nothing revelatory for but I can see how they may be helpful for people who used to eat badly). In the main, the recipes are easy. Sometimes the casualness hides the effort involved. Here's an unedited example (a paragraph found within the recipe for Courgette Banana Bread): "Apple puree is super-simple. Peel and core 20 red apples. Chop into bite sized pieces. Place in a large saucepan with 2cm of water. Cook for 40 minutes, or until very soft, then blend till smooth. Add 3 tablespoons date or maple syrup, or 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon, or both. Store in the fridge for up to 5 days, or freeze in portions." It's very helpful that it can be frozen and used as a sweetener for various recipes. That part is great. But peeling and coring 20 apples whilst not technically difficult, is going to take a while for someone who doesn't cook that often. Overall, while the book was fine, I think Anna Jones demonstrates a deeper understanding of how the ingredients work and sets you up to have a go at creating your own delicious food. So I recommend Anna's books ahead of this book if you're after similarish books within the "healthy vegetarian" category.

🌟🌟🌟🌟 4 stars ✔️(adv.) a book tied to your ancestry (very much a stretch) Bookmarked a few recipes! Most *are* too wholefoods-y for my current mood but look delicious. Wish we had a Deliciously Ella deli in Melbs, it would be really successful I think. It would also change the fast-food scene here, and add a bit of a London-esque touch. Her app is also really handy.

OK. Nothing in the book that isn’t online, though if you enjoy looking through other people’s Instagram this might be worth buying. Mine is heading back to the library.

Ella makes food I actually cook for myself, and her culinary style is so similar to mine that it's uncanny. Reading this cookbook was like reading a really good novel where the author articulates your thoughts back to you. Anyway, I love the food, and this will definitely be a staple in my house. Reading it in order made me appreciate Ella's voice, but I wish she'd had better editors, as the descriptions got repetitive and there is some wonky punctuation. Awesome, vegetarian yet hearty recipes that requires ingredients I typically have. Can’t wait to try more of these recipes. We’ve already added a few into our regular rotation. Highly recommend if you’re looking to add a few meatless dishes to your repertoire.

An excellent introduction to everyday vegan cooking. This recipe books guides you through more than 100 easy recipes, including main meals, side dishes and sweet treats. There is plenty of variation, and you truly don't miss the meat or dairy! Many of the recipes come with a short introduction to tell you what non-vegan dish it could replace, e.g. the sweet potato cakes (one of my new favourites) are Ella's version of traditional fish cakes. I'll be returning to this regularly!

I loved this book- beautiful, practical, simple and delicious- it makes cooking gluten free, vegan options... Or just looking to cook great vegetable dishes easy and amazing!! It is perfect for someone looking to transition to more plant based and looking for better cooking options without being too crazy or too boring. Ella includes shopping lists (it is easy enough to include a page of the items you would need to make all her dishes- and they often do not take long to prepare. Yeah, this one didn't work any better for me than her first book did. I think her stuff is just not my style at all. Plus I find it sort of weird that her books have soooooo many pictures of her in them. She's cute, but I'm way more interested in food. Although not really this food, so I guess it doesn't really matter. Glad so many others are loving it though!

I really enjoy lot of the recipes, but not all. Lets face it, beet root will never be my top veggie, but I generally like to try these recipes and several of them with some modifications became my real favourites - like the mashed potatoes with veggies. I do not always have the combination described by the book, but found ones which work for me. Plus since I am not vegetarian, I also sometimes add meat to the recipe. A brilliant book. A friend bought this for me as a present as I'm gluten intolerant. The recipes are easy to make and have changed my view on how eating vegan and gluten free can be easy, satisfying, tasty and healthy all at the same time. I probably wouldn't have tried to cut out meat and diary as well as gluten if it hadn't been for this book. Effortless revolutionising of the way we eat. Highly recommended.

I love this book. I love that the same ingredients are used which makes shopping so much easier. I like be that she admits to being a lazy cook - I so so relate. The food is delicious and I love that with a little bit of organisation I can whip up lunch in a jiffy. This is the exact book I was looking for. Thank you

Delicious recipes though all high in calorie meals. For housewives like me who doesn't have any kids not that busy as much I need to tweak some of the ingredients to lessen the total calorie of every meal which suits for my lifestyle.

This is my favourite of Ella's books so far. I have all of them and have tried many of the recipes as I have to follow a special diet, and in this respect, her recipes are heaven-sent as they work with my dietary limitations (no gluten, dairy, yeast, shellfish or meat). To be completely honest, it took me a while to get used to the new flavours and food combinations but now I am a complete fan as I feel (and look) so much healthier, and now would not want to eat any other way. This recipe book is my favourite because it contains recipes like the sweet potato risotto and turmeric quinoa curry that I make time and time again, and enjoy every meal. I admire Ella's work ethic and she sent me a couple of sweet messages when she was a young blogger and I was struggling with knowing what to eat each day. Her care and commitment to what she is doing shine through her recipes.
