We like disaster, zombie apocalypse, etc.movies as much as the next couple. My SO has a "Zombie Exterminator Service... We shoot em in the head so you know they're dead" kinda t-shirt. Recently after a post-apocalyptic movie my SO turns to me and asks how I think we'd do. I laugh and tell him he'll be fine so long as he doesn't worry about me, the health-challenged, multiple disability and multiple chronic condition disaster. I laugh and tell him he'll be fine so long as he doesn't worry about me, the health-challenged, multiple disability and multiple chronic condition disaster. He didn't find it as funny as me and asks me to look for a survival guide. The book starts by gently describing the need for this kind of preparation. The author is saying if it happens, it's better to be prepared. This book does a good job of being non-alarmist while urging level-headed preparation. Guidelines for what you need to do and pitfalls to avoid are clear. There's a helpful list of items you'd want in a home emergency kit as well as one for your car. You learn the basics of how to make first aid and how to make camp. There's a helpful list of items you'd want in a home emergency kit and one for your car. There's information on harvesting, storing and planting seeds if the disaster is long-term. There's lots of helpful info on the basics of what you need to do to survive. I like that the author directs you to do things like take a first aid class, a CPR class, learn what plants in your area are edible (there's classes and books about this too), etc to be sure you know what you're doing, as opposed to trying to glean it from just reading. It's emphasized that you should learn something about hunting methods, how to use a gun, fishing, gardening etc before catastrophe strikes. This book does a good job of pointing out the variety of things you should know, so that you can go out and take classes in the areas you're weak. There's tips on how to do things, which can also serve to let you know where you need to study if it's complete news to you. This is a good book, particularly for newbies to survival preparation, to introduce them to what things you can do now like which items you should gather and what classes you need to take to make surviving a disaster more likely. The book is filled with helpful tips, but unless you're already prepared, you will need more books and classes. This book is a great first step. Personally, I still think my odds are low, but I now have terrific lists to assemble items my SO will need and know which areas he'll need to learn to better his chance of survival. I received this at a free or discounted rate in exchange for my honest review.
