I wanted to like this book. I tried to like this book. I couldn't. Trying to look at it from the vantage-point of the intended 4-8 year old audience, as well as from an adult who helps select their reading material, I have decided not to pass this book along to my grandchildren. The concept – The goal of explaining racism and its inherent weaknesses in terms that a child will understand was a noble undertaking. Allowing for the weaknesses of this book (described below), the author does succeed in this goal in my opinion. The characters – there's too many of them, and as such, most make such brief appearances that we have no real idea who or what they are. Their names seem a little convoluted, as well – but then, I can say the same about Dr. Seuss and it seemed to have worked for him. Vocabulary – A lot of the words are a little complex for 4 year olds. Some of the words are a little complex for 8 year olds. One thing the aforementioned Dr. Seuss was a master of was selecting a suitable set of vocabular words for each book; the author does not share this same ability. (Then again, I fear a lot of children's book writers fail in this regard, as well.) The artwork – I would rate this “middle of the pack”; I've seen a lot of children's books with more effective and pleasing artwork, but then, I've also seen many that are worse. I give the artist (who is also the author) props for effective use of color. Overall, as stated, I was not pleased with this effort and will not be sharing it with the grandkids. Fortunately, there are some redeeming qualities to rescue it from the dreaded “1 star” (which I try soooooo hard not to give out; authors are human beings and work hard to produce their product; I hate to even dishonor them with 2 stars if at all possible). RATING: 2 stars. DISCLOSURE: I was awarded a free copy of this book in a random draw. No requirement of a review was made, let alone any conditions on the tone / content of a review, however, it was suggested that “an honest review would be appropriate” upon winning. (At this point, they may be regretting that idea.)
