This is a fun, fast paced romance novel that is perfect for a hot summer day. I could not put it down. It is story driven and has a lot of twists. The main characters were well defined, likable and showed the differences between generations. KC Chanter has a bright future ahead of her. While "His Darlin' Love" stands well on its own, I look forward to the next installment. If you like romance and cowboys, this book is for you.

Andrew is a dreamer and imagines his eldest son Jeremy (H) marrying Stephen’s daughter Colleena (h) to continue the business and grow the family. Colleena’s mother dies when she’s a preteen, but when her father dies when she’s nineteen the whole Chase/MacTavish family comes apart at the seams. By this time the h is engaged to the H, but after her father dies she runs away and no one knows why. She doesn’t explain what the problem is she just disappears! They think she’s dead at the hands of the serial killer. So then her adopted brother (secondary H) finds her and her BFF (secondary h) and the h is sick so they all go back to the ranch where the h finally has to confront the patriarch of the family Andrew Chase. The h gets mouthy and acts totally unrepentant and they start fighting and Andrew loses his temper and turns the h over his knee and spanks her (for which he does admit was a mistake at the loss of his temper and apologizes). Meanwhile, the H is trying to find the right time to have it out with the h and find out why she left in the first place, but every time he thinks they’re going to the freaky weird neighbor girl Carol, (h’s lifelong rival for H affections although the H has zero interest in her) gets in the way. The h gets fed up with the constant interruptions and in a fit of anger accepts a date from Carol’s brother Chester (the molester) a guy who she really can’t stand but does it just to piss off the H. This is when the H finally finds out the truth of why the h left via the secondary h (I love how she smacked him! Lol). So they all go after the h and her date with the intention of explaining the truth etc, but things don’t turn out the way the H hopes. Before the end the h is in the hands of the serial killer and needs to be saved by the H. The secondary H & h have their own HEA after the h leaves the ranch in humiliation and is chased after by the H who apologizes for not treating her with more care. The cowboys are kinda dominating but in the end the older women put them in their place.

The heroes are in the house each time he hits their women and were aware of his plans to discipline their women. The father is punishing them because they put themselves in danger by running away. One passage of him hitting the heroine... “You run away from this ranch in the middle of the night! The day after your father’s funeral! And we don’t hear from you! Not a single word for more than two years!” Andrew shouted furiously as his hand with the belt descended. Colleena gasped, and screamed, and fought even harder as his belt struck across her back side twice with a stinging bite. “And when we do find you you’re so sick you’re damn near dead!” he shouted and hit her two more times with the belt. Colleena’s screams shook the house. “Stop it! Stop it! You’re not my father! You have no damn right whipping me!” "As Jeremy lay Colleena on her bed she rolled away from him with a furious sob and he saw the red welts his father’s belt had left on the silken flesh just above the waistband of her pajama pants." At the end, the father spanks the heroine's friend after he makes her change into her pajamas pants. He spanks her without the belt but also across his lap and makes her cry. Her hero actually delivers her to the father for the spanking. These are adult women and he is a father with grown sons!!!! I could not stomach much more of the book after I skimmed a few pages. I thought the father was a deranged pervert and the two supposed heroes who let this man abuse their women were not worthy of them. A yuck and a pass..this is not romantic but abusive and disturbing behavior of associating violence with love. The father threatens to go after the sister at the end so there may be a sequel."

There was much of this book that I enjoyed but the creepy dominance of the male characters had me gritting my teeth as I read. It would have been a great book without the spankings.

It took me a minute to get into this book but once I did I couldn't put it down! I love the characters and the story, I've met a few characters like them in my time so they were very interesting. The story was intriguing and picturesque. I also loved the next book!
