This I found as a bonus story at the end of Jessica Loft's Navy Seal Sunset: Second Chance. Brinson and Lily meet when they are just kids and while Lily is driven and wants to be a teacher. Brinson wants to drink beer and hang out on the beach. That is until 911. He hears the beating of the drum so to speak and he joins the army. Brinson and Lily meet when they are just kids and while Lily is driven and wants to be a teacher. Brinson wants to drink beer and hang out on the beach. That is until 911. He hears the beating of the drum so to speak and he joins the army. Lily clings to him as he leaves neither ready for marriage but in love. They promise when he comes back they'll be together. Twelve years later Brinson started a security P.I. agency and has learned that Lily is widowed and has a daughter. They lost touch shortly after he went in to the service. Brinson has thought about her everyday since they parted but does not know how to approach her now. She owns a lodge in Montana. Fate takes care of that and she reaches out to him. Her daughter has been abducted and she begs for his help. The two meet and while the story could have been interesting Wentwood began to lose her grip on me. **********BEGINNING OF SPOILERS********** The mystery abductor clobbers you over the head. Brinson showed no nose for detection. It is obvious from the use of Lily's late husband's being referred to as Toddy. That showed that it was a personal level. What is worse however is Brinson asking for every detail and asking about certain individuals and their relationship. Lily gave no indication there was anything there. When the truth is revealed however Lily unleashes this huge secret about the man at a young age involved with missing girls and her always knowing something was off. That is not at all what her words were in the beginning. What she reveals would have left no doubt in her mind who took her daughter. It made the in between seem stupid. The ending as well left me scratching my head. The two move back to the lodge to live. It was a constant reminder of what Lily and Todd shared. It wasn't what they could be and build together but felt like he was stepping into another mans place. No mention of his PI agency or his aspirations but giving up everything he knew and had to play house in another mans inheritance. ***********END OF SPOILERS************ During Lily and Brinson's chase to get her daugther (Tory) back they are forced to spend a night in a cave. This is the part about second chance romances that make me want to avoid them. Lily knows the woods and Brinson asks her to take them somewhere for coverage for the night. She chooses her and her late husband Todd's special place, complete with a heart declaring their love for each other forever. This is a detail that does not need to be put out there (IMO). Here is Brinson seeing those initials knowing how he still loves her and questioning if what they had was real. He is lost and feels like he was stabbed threw the heart. It was difficult for me to draw pleasure from any of this. Brinson may have had his flings along the way but no one ever matched up to Lily but apparently she could replace him and then rub his nose in it. It was a cruel detail for the author to put out there. I could feel his pain and I felt as he did. What made it worse is while he's listening to all she has to tell he does not take some time to deal with it and absorb it. The two make love and it just felt out of place. This pain he is struggling with throughout the book and what it suddenly goes away and you can just let it go and open yourself up so quickly again? The next morning she is acting distant from him and there is tension between them again. When it is all over and 7 bodies are uncovered the two alongside Tory seek out the beach to regroup. The ending is a happy one but again felt wrong for me. I mentioned it in my spoiler alert but I felt like Brinson made all the sacrifices only to live in another mans shadow. This huge image everyone had of Todd and what a great man he was. I see years of drinking beer in the woods trying to live up the late and great Todd. Enjoy?
