This is a bit of a mess. The title of this book is 'Proper Healthy Food' and 'Hearty vegan and vegetarian recipes for meat lovers' is just the strapline. I reckon the world was ready for this book. Linda McCartney tried to do something like this years ago - vegetarian food for people who enjoy meat. Her book involved a lot of outright meat substitutes but the world of food has moved on and this book reflects developments, not following any one slavishly. There are some dishes with long lists of metropolitan ingredients, but some pretty down to earth inexpensive offerings. I'll be trying the Marmite Roast Potatoes. So far, so delicious. But this is a confused and, more importantly, misleading book. I doubt that simply eating using the dishes presented here would lead to weight loss (hearty and low calorie don't go together really) Knowles had something of an epiphany whilst on a retreat in Thailand, he changed his diet and has also invested in two vegan restaurants (it was that surprising information that led me to this book in the first place). Good job he's not the chef as his approach to diet is entirely founded on his own health, evidently he eats much less meat these days and thinks about what he eats more. But he is not 'a vegan' or 'a vegetarian' and this is perhaps why he includes and labels recipes, in a book described as 'vegan and vegetarian recipes' as vegetarian when they contain gelatine sheets, Parmesan and fish sauce. Fish sauce! The section on why go vegan or vegetarian is poor. Inexcusably poor given that he's referred to in the third person, so has presumably delegated this. There are no references to more authoritative sources of information and there's generally a mealy mouthed tone, implying heavily that the right approach is to eat meat occasionally for health and social reasons.
