The many thinkers discussed include G. A. Cohen, Ronald Dworkin, William Galston, Carol Gilligan, R. M. Hare, Chandran Kukathas, Catherine Mackinnon, David Miller, Philippe Van Parijs, Susan Okin, Robert Nozick, John Rawls, John Roemer, Michael Sandel, Charles Taylor, Michael Walzer, and Iris Young. Extended guides to further reading have been added at the end of each chapter, listing the most important books and articles on each school of thought, as well as relevant journals and websites. Covering some of the most advanced contemporary thinking, Will Kymlicka writes in an engaging, accessible, and non-technical way to ensure the book is suitable for students approaching these difficult concepts for the first time. This second edition promises to build on the original edition's success as a key text in the teaching of modern political theory.

Thorough and yet very accessible. One quibble: Nearly all of Kymlicka's criticisms are undertaken from his (liberal egalitarian) point of view. While some of them are definitely spot-on (e.g., his discussions of the communitarian critique of the liberal self and perfectionist strands of Marxism) and the emergence of the author's own outlook is almost inevitable (and by no means necessarily unwelcome), I still think he could have made a greater effort to canvass a broader set of perspectives.

This book is an almost perfect introduction to contemporary political philosophy and its most important debates...

I found this to be a very fair and balanced primer. You certainly FEEL smart at the end. While I'm not sure it was the author's intent, I concluded that political philosophy is an exercise in persuasion that is doomed if it seeks a coherent set of principles that are "right".

fascinating review of Rawls' theory of justice and moving into Libertarianism, especially Nozick Entitlement Theory on self ownership of property. I could follow the final chapter on Marxism and Feminism as closely.

A very useful book to know and understand modern political theories and philosophies. The author does not shy away from discussing complex issues and ideas and has been able to present and analyse them in a nuanced way. Despite all this, the writing style is engaging and accessible. An added attraction is chapter wise list of further readings.

This book is littered with intricately woven arguments that constantly relate each theory discussed to those that have been detailed in previous chapters. This continuous comparison is not only helpful in the formation of the reader's opinions, but in the increased clarity it brings to the theories included.

I was supposed to read only two sections of chapter 3, but I end up with reading three whole chapters. I'll definitely buy this book and keep it as a valuable reference for moral, social and political most raised-up questions. I highly recommend it.

An epic read. A superb introduction to political philosophy. A massive brain workout but if you stick with it, it’s worth it! The author’s favouritism for liberalism shines throughout but it is justified against other contemporary ideologies.

A great entry into looking further into political philosophies, but inadequate with unbiased modern conceptions of justice. But, very, VERY, well written.

I'd never think I'd get so excited about political philosophy, but this book was genuinely enjoyable and made me fall in love with the subject. I bought it for my Egalitarianism course at the uni and love it.

I would definetely recomed anyone scrolling over here to read this book. Kymlicka makes political philosophy an accessible topic, and he gives loads and loads of information in a very simple and easy understandable language. The book really helps putting random thoughts and intuitions in order, as well as better understanding what one actually thinks a fair society would look like.

Pretty interesting book. It's not too dry either. It feels like it is mostly about conceptions of Justice though even if some of these ways of thinking explicitly are against justice. I'm gonna shower as a reward for finishing this book.
