During career week, this will be a good book for younger readers. It's a brief introduction to the different duties police officers have.

A Day with Police Officers delivers on what the title promises, a no frills look at what a police officer does in the course of his or her day. I appreciate how much the author manages to cover without getting into anything scary or dangerous that would be upsetting to kids in the book's target age range of 3-5 years old. I appreciate how much the author manages to cover without getting into anything scary or dangerous that would be upsetting to kids in the book's target age range of 3-5 years old. In this book, police officers keep people safe (though nowhere does the book cover from what people need to be protected.) Officers go to a morning meeting, they write tickets, they patrol parade routes on horseback, they patrol a harbor in a boat, they direct traffic and work with a police dog to find clues (again, no mention of what sort of clues.) This book walks the fine line between being informative and not being startling. Children reading this book would not be frightened to ask a police officer for help. Like many of the other non-fiction books reviewed here, this book is in a small format, with two to three sentences of text paired with a detailed photograph. It is divided into "chapters" so beginning readers have a chance to rest. For a read aloud, an adult could read all of the book, or just parts of the book if time were short. I'd like to see this at a preschool storytime with a theme of "people in the community." I am reminded of the song Mr. Rogers sang "Who Are the People in Your Neighborhood." That would make a fine musical addition to a storytime with this book. For a fictional title, Huck Scarry wrote a book called "A Day at the Police Station."

Response: I awarded A Day with Police Officers 5 stars. I gave it a 5 stars because it was an informative book, that shows students what police officers do on a daily basis to keep them safe, and maybe it will influence children to become police officers in the future. Classroom Management: There are a few strategies that could be taught, or reflected upon, based upon this book in the classroom. You could show students the strategy of reading aloud to a group of students and how to properly incorporate the reading with the illustrations. It could show students how to properly hold the book while reading to a group so that they may see the pictures, since it is a smaller book, it is easier for the children to read. My 6 year old son checked this book out from his school library. The book describes what it is like to be a police officer. It gives information about how they keep people safe and what their jobs are. Has really good information for a young reader. Colorful pictures to go with each page and the information is easy for young readers to understand. My son needed very little help reading this book.
