Cornelia Day was the Vice President's Assistant, but now he's the President Elect she is moving up in the world as his nominated Chief of Staff. In her first day in the Situation Room she meets Marine Corps Situation Room Duty Officer Damien Feinman. Damien is an anomaly, a Marine who has served 10 years in a job that should be rotated every two years. Damien is just as fascinated by the unusual woman before him and the puzzle she poses. This is most definitely a meeting of minds. Two highly intellectual, driven individuals at the peak of their careers, analytical and thoughtful they see far more than others around them. TBH, that would be enough for me but, because it's Christmas Matt gave us more. A mysterious meeting with an old enemy in an infamous New York deli provides clues to a potential terrorist attack. But where? And when? This was deeply satisfying both as a Night Stalkers White House novella, a romance, a mystery AND a holiday story. Loved it.

Buchman is a novella that is part of the ‘Night Stalkers White House’ series and follows Cornelia Day as she begins to deal with becoming Chief of Staff for President-elect Zachary Thomas. Complicating her life is cocky Damien Feinman, the head of the Situation Room duty watch who uses his talents as both a librarian and Marine to continue to efficiently perform his unprecedented tenure. The sparks that fly between them provide great entertainment for the powerful people who surround them, but a mysterious warning about an upcoming event could derail the new administration before it can even truly begin, and may prove fatal to the budding romance. This contemporary story blends romance and suspense in a compelling tale that provides plenty of ‘aw’ moments with exciting action scenes even as it gives a unique glimpse of some of the complicated maneuvering accompanying the installation of a new president. Unfortunately, I have not read the other stories in this particular spinoff of one of my favorite military romance series, but that does not detract from my enjoyment of this particular tale. As usual, the author creates larger-than-life characters who are appealing for both their intellect and their physical prowess, even more impressive considering the familiar characters who already people this compelling series, some of whom popped in for their own cameos. I loved the tour of the lesser known areas of the White House and drooled over the description of the chocolatier’s creations, and my appetite is definitely whetted to visit the areas of D.C. so vividly described. This was a great way to armchair travel while enjoying a quick exciting tale. A copy of this story was provided to me for review.

Damien's Christmas may be the perfect story. As an avid reader, I don't say that lightly. In the latest of his "White House" books, Buchman has created characters who are so three dimensional that you expect to meet them while you are picking up your morning coffee. While weaving a compelling story, he gives you an unexpectedly clear view of the enormous demands that are a part of the daily life for people in some of the most critical roles in our government. Corneila and Damien were made for each other. Together they keep the world safe. In the world of 2018 and a morally disaster and in fighting in the real White House, this story was pure happiness, camaraderie, love and friends for life doing a great job . Sorry to see this series end

This book is just like that. Damien and Cornelia are two misfit over-achievers who have worked themselves into their perfect jobs. He’s the 10 year veteran of the White House Situation Room, the senior duty watch officer for the National Security Council– a Marine who is a librarian, an information specialist with rumpled hair in a rumpled suit. Cornelia is newly promoted to be President Peter Matthew’s Chief of Staff – whip smart, focused – and feeling in-over-her-head when she’s called to a secret meeting with Mr. Pejman, the assistant to the U.N. ambassador from Iran. Although she moves like a dancer, Cornelia is awkward with the opposite sex, understanding that her short term relationships are her own fault: “Her lovers never stuck… they consistently departed fast enough that there was no question who was the problem in the relationship—six-week average with a two-week first standard deviation. The outliers were a one-night mistake and a four-month data point that never should have occurred. She’d have cast out the latter except she hadn’t had that many relationships and without him her averages slid downward badly.” Gotta love a woman who uses statistical analysis to grade her romantic life! Given these two highly unlikely lovers, where does the chocolate magic come from? Good chocolate has flavor accents: orange, pecans, truffles--and this book abounds in flavor accents: Washington, DC--the geography, the history, the energy. The White House, a setting and culture Buchman has used before, but this time we see into not only the White House residence, but the President’s Situation Room – the place for decisions, informed decisions. Christmas with all its sentiments, history, music, lights, energy. Star Trek references add new and different dimensions . Helicopters: power, energy, instant flight capability and Night Stalker history. Food: from Katz’s Deli in NYC to an Irish pub to Christmas chocolate in the White House - the best of the best food. A mystery: And like all Buchman mysteries, this one is clever and impenetrable. Suspense: Disaster looms in spite of Damien and Cornelia’s solution of the clever and impenetrable mystery. Can they avert the disaster in time? And finally, of course, Romance. A smooth, yummy masterful blend of holiday flavors and colors, sparkle and glow, Damien’s Christmas is a treat for all my senses. Highest recommendation. Thanks to M.L. Buchman for this holiday confection. NB: I received a free copy of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

He's charming, smart and extremely handsome. In other words, he's too good to be true. Damien is keen to peek beneath the controlled exterior of the new Chief of Staff. What he sees leaves him breathless - and scrambling to make a good impression. He has to relearn the rules of romance, and time is short because this is not just a love story. Terrorists are planning to strike at the heart of American culture and the handful of clues are cryptic. When Cornelia and Damien figure out where and when, they might already be too late. M.L. Buchman has been on my to do list for a while. Like Cornelia's, my to do list is endless, so this Christmas novella was a great place to start. I quickly got to know the characters, including many of the other White House staffers, in such a way that I'm interested in going back to read more. The romance was sweet with Cornelia's character being inspiring and Damien only "nearly" too good to be true. Watching him discover and acknowledge his faults was fun. Watching Cornelia fall was lovely. Add in a suspense plot and a healthy, but not over the top dose of Christmas cheer, and you have a feel good read. Meet Mr. Tongue-tied. Cordelia Day is the new White House Chief of Staff and is trying to learn her new duties, but a certain Marine/Librarian won't stay out of her thoughts. Now it's up to them to solve the conundrum that stumps them while also trying to navigate a new relationship. I enjoyed the strong female lead, but wish the crisis was more integrated into the storyline. It didn't detract from the story, but it would've rounded it out a bit more. As is true of the other White House Christmas stories, it doesn't focus on the Nighstalkers, but it does allow the reader to say "hello" to some old favorites.

"I received a free copy of this title from the publisher in exchange for an honest review." I love M.L. Buchman's Night Stalker White House romances. But he's not a paper pusher... no, this marine is as handsome as he is intelligent! I love that the hot alpha male embraces his role as a sort of librarian while staying on the leading edge of the most sensitive, classified information. And not only is this a fantastic love story, but Buchman creates a crisis situation that our lead characters are uniquely qualified to handle. Talk about being in the right place at the right time! When you start reading, you won't be able to put it down! I just wish these books came out more often!

Although I have read many of M.L. stories, I have not read many of the 'The Night Stalker's White House" Series. With that said, "Damien's Christmas" stands alone quite well. I love strong men and women, and with the story of Cornelia and Damien, you get a strong pairing of two people that work in the White House. Cornelia's mind, as incoming chief of staff, is quick and never stops thinking on how to solve a problem, and is on a par with Damien's equally quick mind. Together these two minds make for a great suspenseful story with a romance that has them falling in love, and a wonderful conclusion to 'The Night Stalker's White House' series. The diplomacy is as it should be when dealing with dignitaries, the action quick and exact, the romance subtle and sweet, and the book an all around winner. The threat is plausible and they meet and beat it with a little help from their friends.
