A Deadly Eclair is the debut book in the 'A French Bistro Mystery' series written by Daryl Wood Gerber. I read the second book in this series earlier in the year after winning it in a giveaway contest. I enjoyed the characters and setting which led me to starting the series from the beginning. There's something about the Napa Valley atmosphere full of wine, food, and culture that makes the books easy-to-read, immersive, and charming. There's something about the Napa Valley atmosphere full of wine, food, and culture that makes the books easy-to-read, immersive, and charming. I've been to many of the places being described or noted which helps ensure an even tighter connection to the story and the characters. It also helps that the books are well-written with the right balance of humor and knowledge (about wine, food, relationships, France). Mimi's husband died several years ago leaving her broke. After settling his debt and untying her emotional loss over all his lies, she moved back home to start anew. This book kicks off many months later once she's decided to open a restaurant with the backing of a new partner, Bryan. He's a pseudo-father figure for Mimi who lost her dad years ago. Bryan asks her to manager his niece's wedding as part of her first few events. All goes smoothly until Bryan is found dead with one of Mimi's famous desserts in his mouth... and, oh yeah, some jewels. Mimi's surrounded by his family, his niece's soon-to-be husband's family, and some interesting friends. Which one of them had a past connection to Bryan that led to murder? Throw in some wonderful side stories with how Mimi bonds with her new staff, opens her heart to going on a date for the first time, makes new friends, helps her mom overcome some new steps in her life, and tries to earn a living despite a few wondering if she killed Bryan to kick him out of her business. She's tough, but caring. She's a little nosy for my tastes, but it's often typical of these types of series. Mimi has an investment in knowing who killed Bryan since it relates to her new inn, but at times, I felt like she grilled people a bit too much. Especially when they were her guests and she was trying to succeed with her new business. She'd annoy someone in one chapter, then they were friendly with her again in the next one. Maybe I just hold grudges a bit too long! Now that I've devoured two, I can say I'm a series fan and look forward to the third which I assume will be published in mid-2019. I'll be on the lookout for joining the blog tour or ARC team if possible...

After Mimi had sold everything she could to pay the debts she was left with she returned home to Nouvelle Vie in Napa Valley where a friend introduced her to entrepreneur Bryan Baker who saw something in Mimi's dream and invested in her opening a bistro and inn. Mimi has found a bit of success and is working away to pay Bryan back and hosting the inn's first destination wedding. Things were going as planned with the wedding activities until the morning Bryan's body is found having been murdered and all clues point to Mimi. A Deadly Eclair by Daryl Wood Gerber is the first book in the new cozy mystery series, A French Bistro Mystery. This series is certainly one that the foodies will enjoy as the setting leads to plenty of delightful sounding founds to be described all throughout the book. Then as if the mouth watering food during the read wasn't quite enough to satisfy there are also recipes included at the end of the book for readers to try some of the foods out on their own. I would say the one thing that put me off a bit with reading Mimi's story and really loving this book was the fact that the author chose to have the victim be someone fairly close to the main character. For the most part my experience with cozies the victim is usually and unknown or barely known person but it seemed a bit off for Mimi to immediately start chasing suspects to clear herself instead of grieving right away. Otherwise, the book has all the usual investigating and likable enough to characters to leave me rating this one at 3.5 stars when finished. She is hosting her first wedding ceremony when I arrived. The guests were all checking in as well and the festivities began. Bryan Baker her mentor, investor, and friend is the uncle of the bride. As with any family Mimi and I noticed right away this family had a lot of behind the scenes drama….a lot...like soap opera level drama. We got through the night unscathed, but sometime in the night Bryan is murdered and his body found in the wee hours of the morning. It seems like multiple people have reasons for wanting Bryan dead, and Mimi and I plan on finding out the truth… My thoughts: Listened to this book on audio for the “hooked on books” feature of my blog, so make sure you check out the blanket that accompanied this read (it’s my favorite that I have made!). The narrator of this book was ok….the book is the same. It was the first book in a new series. The setting was absolutely beautiful, but I just didn’t feel a connection to the characters or the bistro. The mystery was done well...I didn’t solve the mystery and enjoyed the twist at the end when the motive and killer was revealed. Overall, this book was alright...not great not bad. I will definitely check out book 2 before I make a decision about this series. I would recommend culinary mystery lovers check out this new series. I am a fan of Daryl Wood Gerber's Cookbook Nook mysteries and also her Cheese Shop series (written as Avery Aames), so I jumped at the chance to read this first book in a new series! I'm glad I did! This book is a fun read with interesting characters, a great plot and interesting theme. The basics -- Mimi Rousseau has always dreamed of owning her own french bistro, but personal issues and financial problems stood in her way. With the help of a financial backer, Bryan Baker, she was able to get enough capital together to open a bistro and inn in Nouvelle Vie in Napa Valley. Now, she's working hard to pay back the money she borrowed to make her dreams come true. Baker tells her the best way to showcase the new inn is to host a celebrity wedding. The wedding of his niece, Talk Show Host Angelica Barrington, will be the bistro & inn's first destination wedding. Mimi needs things to go off without a hitch. If everything goes perfectly, her new business venture will get a great boost to help it grow during its first year. The wedding party arrives and all seems to be going well, despite the bride's father showing up drunk. Things take a dark turn, however, when Bryan is found dead in the bistro, an eclair shoved into his mouth. Mimi finds herself a murder suspect, and begins investigating to clear her name. I know next to nothing about bistros and french cuisine, but enjoyed this book immensely! The story is well-written and moves along at a fast, but nice, pace. There are a lot of suspects and some neat twists before the end. I like Mimi as a main character. She is strong, intelligent and working so hard to realize her dreams. She doesn't fall apart when things go wrong, she just takes a deep breath and starts working to find out the truth. Nicely done! I am never disappointed by Daryl Wood Gerber! A Deadly Eclair is the first book in Gerber's new French Bistro mystery series. The second book, Souffle of Suspicion will be out in July 2018. Dollycas’s Thoughts This series is off to a magnificent (magnifique) start! Mimi Rousseau is living her dream of owning her own inn and bistro. She has collaborated with Bryan Baker for the financial backing needed for the purchase and the vast remodeling effort to get both places open. Things start to go awry with Angelica’s father, Edison, arrives at the out-of-towners’ dinner, but when Bryan is found dead the next morning at the bistro with an éclair in his month, Mimi doesn’t think things can get any worse. Now her mentor is dead and she is a prime suspect. I have been looking forward to the book since I first saw the cover pop up on Facebook and it certainly exceeded my expectations. As a fan of the author’s Cheese Shop Mysteries and Cookbook Nook Mysteries, I knew the characters would be strong and the food descriptions would have my mouth watering and I was right. Mimi Rousseau has a lot on her plate but I knew right away she could handle it. She is strong and savvy and has hired a top-notch staff. Chef C. and sous chef Stefan keep the kitchen under control while Heather runs the dining room. The inn, a fancy bed and breakfast, is managed by Mimi’s BFF, Jorianne. Mimi oversees everything from the menus and wine to all the events happening at the inn and bistro. All of the characters are very well defined for the first book in a series but there is plenty of room for them to grow. The secondary cast, the wedding party, family and friends, are also very well crafted. I was drawn right in to all of their drama. The story was very fast paced with some corkscrew twists and more suspects than I at first set my sites on. This author knows how to set the scene and have readers nibbling on each little clue as we follow Mimi in her investigation. The mystery is well plotted and so entertaining. I was enthralled from the first page until the last and then I wanted more. Now let me talk about the food. Oh my! Thanks to the tantalizing descriptions I could almost taste and smell so many delightful dishes and even the unique flavors of the wine served. I love onion soup so every time it was mentioned my cravings stepped up another notch. Daryl Wood Gerber does share some recipes in the back of the book including recipes for Chocolate Éclairs and Onion Soup Gratinée. Both have been copied into my recipes file. I am really excited about this new series and can’t wait for book #2, A Soufflé of Suspicion, coming in July 2018.

I feel enriched and inspired as well as entertained. Her descriptive writing will leave your mouth watering. I love how she includes recipes for you to savor while immersing yourself in the story. The mystery is full of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. All of the characters are well developed and down to earth with a touch of quirkiness. I can’t wait to see the evolution and see what the future holds for everyone in Nouvelle Vie. The introduction to a lot of local characters holds the potential of additional storylines in the future. The setting of the Inn and the Bistro also opens the door for new characters to infuse the dynamics. While the town is fictional, the area is real and I thoroughly enjoyed the bits and pieces of history about the region woven into the story. Ms. Gerber’s writing virtually transports you to wine country and will have you planning your next vacation. A liberal sprinkle of humor enhances the charm of this fabulous new series. Food, wine and murder, the perfect cozy trifecta, make this a favorite new series for 2017. I look forward to the next adventure, A Soufflé of Suspicion. À votre santé! A huge thank you to the author, Crooked Lane, and Netgalley for the opportunity to voluntarily read and review an advance readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

It’s fun to find a series set in Napa County that doesn’t focus on wine, although wine is certainly present. The French food will definitely leave your mouth watering as you work your way through this good first mystery. The initial chapter has a bit of a data dump in it, but once beyond that, the mystery picks up and the pace never slows down again. The characters are outstanding, and the relationships between the series regulars is already strong. I’m looking forward to seeing that grow as the series progresses. Protagonist Mimi Rousseau, has a smart and feisty personality I immediately liked and has successfully established a first-class restaurant and beautiful bed-and-breakfast inn with the financial help and guidance of wealthy entrepreneur, Bryan Baker. Mimi has gathered a likeable, top-notch crew to assist her at Bistro Rousseau including the marvelous Chef C; hostess-with-the-mostess, Heather; and no-last-name sous chef, Stefan. A VIP wedding party arrives at the Inn. Bryan's niece, Angelica, who's a popular talk-show host, is marrying Lyle, a jeweler. Various family members assemble for the weekend nuptials at a celebratory dinner. After finishing the main meal and delicious eclairs for dessert, the diners slowly disperse. The next morning, Bryan is no longer alive. Evidence gathered at the crime scene points suspicion toward Mimi. She noticed emotions running high the evening before and feels strongly that one of the dinner guests is a cold-blooded murderer. A DEADLY ECLAIR is rich with beautiful prose and liberally frosted with breathtaking scenic details and food--oh! the food! I didn't want to take my eyes off the words on the pages in case I would miss something! The mystery itself is compelling--heart touching and tragic--and the perpetrator proved well-hidden from me. The fictional setting of Nouvelle Vie, including the inn and bistro, will have you seriously considering a vacation to Napa Valley, and the food mentioned throughout the novel will leave your mouth watering! Bottom Line: A Deadly Eclair by Daryl Wood Gerber is clean, fun, and well written. The characters are well defined without being caricature, and the recipes tempt even me to try my hand at a few. A Deadly Éclair, the first book in Daryl Wood Gerber’s “A French Bistro Mystery” series did just that. I could not put this book down! The pacing of the plot was perfect; the mystery was intriguing; there was a lot of humor, and a hint of romance too. This new series is set in Napa Valley, a place that is now on my bucket list thanks to Ms. Gerber’s vivid description of this area of California and the interesting pieces of its history. A Deadly Éclair introduces us to a strong, relatable, and feisty heroine, Mimi Rousseau, who has finally been able to open up an inn and the bistro of her dreams after a local entrepreneur, Bryan Baker, offers to support her dream financially. When Bryan ends up dead though, Mimi becomes the number one suspect in his murder. As Mini tries to clear her name, we meet the book’s supporting characters…Mimi’s mother, her best friend, a new love interest, and the staff at the inn and bistro…all of whom lend a unique depth to the story because they are all so different yet united in their love, friendship, and support of Mimi. Overall, I found this to be a fantastic book, and I can’t wait to read the next one in this series. By the way, don’t forget to check out the delicious and mouth-watering recipes included at the end of the book!

Outstanding book by Daryl Wood Gerber. I could not put the book down! This lovely story had me guessing at every turn to figure it who did it, and I didn't guess it right which is a first! It was very enjoyable with all the wonderful characters. Mimi's pet fish were the perfect companions and I died laughing. I cannot wait to get the next book in this collection. I was excited to get my hands on an ARC of this book because I always take great enjoyment from reading this author, I've liked all her series. With Bryan's help Mimi's dream of owning her own Bistro and Inn are becoming a reality. When Bryan's niece decides to use Mimi for her wedding she can't help but look towards the future with happiness. The wedding will be all anyone can talk about and Mimi thinks of the exposure it will bring to her little slice of heaven will receive. When Bryan is found dead at the Bistro the morning after family and friends have gotten together Mimi realizes she must figure out who the killer is so that she can clear her good name. She is terrified that her business will suffer before it has truly gotten off the ground. Who killed Bryan and why and will Mimi be able to find those answers? The author did a fantastic job of writing some wonderfully in depth characters. I liked how their differences stood out and how they interacted with one another. Her description of Nouvelle Vie had me wanting to book a flight so that I could visit this charming destination and take a tour of all it had to offer. Don't get me started on the fabulous recipes that she included at the end. If you love to cook they are definitely a bonus and and a fun way to end any story. I received an ARC from Netgalley, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I think this is a great start to the series and I enjoyed it. I did have a little trouble getting into it, but once it caught my attention, I couldn't put it down. Our main character, Mimi, is great. She's well-rounded, complex, and fun to read about. Her sidekicks, Heather, Jo, and Raymond are all great too. In fact, I almost like Heather and Raymond more than Mimi. Almost. :) The setting descriptions were great, which I've come to expect from this author. I'm totally in love with the fact that the inn and gardens are based on Monet's house in Giverny. Visiting Giverny is on my bucket list of "someday I'll get there". :) The plot line was well done and well-written. I didn't know who the villain was until very close to when they revealed it, which is always great in a mystery! I like mysteries that keep me guessing. :) I really enjoyed this book. It didn't quite have enough sparkle and pizzazz to put it over the top into a 5 star book, and it did take me a bit to get into it, but it's a solid 4 out of 5 stars and I definitely recommend it for those who love cozies and/or other books by Daryl Wood Gerber! Enjoy it!

The food sounds amazing in this book and plays a unique part in the crime itself. There are plenty of delicious sounding recipes included at the end which will tempt those readers who can cook. If it is possible to gain weight by reading a book then this might be the book that could make it happen! I think my favorite character might be Jo, she is a force to be reckoned with as Mimi's manager and all around go to woman. She is a woman with a plan and doesn't stop to question what might go wrong. The mystery itself has multiple layers and many moving parts. There were many people to suspect for various reasons and the how and why that was revealed at the end was a surprise (to me at least). I think this is going to be a great new series and especially since there are many recipes at the end of the book for us to try.

I feel I should explain my 3 star rating on this book. It wasn't a bad book, but it lacked the things I look for in a cozy mystery. The small town charm and the endearing characters. The mystery was well done, but I just never felt fully invested in either the story line or the characters' lives. And for me, that's what cozy mysteries are all about. If you're looking for a good mystery, it might be your thing. Heck, it might even be your cozy mystery thing. But it wasn't mine. I feel I should explain my 3 star rating on this book. Mimi Rousseau owns her own inn and bistro. Bryan Baker has helped her with the financial baking needed for the purchase. The bistro is holding its first wedding. Bryan's niece is getting married at the inn, but when Bryan is found dead at the bistro, Mimi becomes the main suspect. I loved the array of characters and all of the food descriptions. I will be looking at the recipes at the end of the book. They mystery had many twists and I was shocked at who the killer was. This was a great start to Mimi Rousseau owns her own inn and bistro. I have been a longtime fan of the various books that Daryl Wood Gerber writes, be it her cozy mystery series or her suspense novels. When I found out that she was debuting the first book in her French Bistro mystery series, I counted down the days until I could read it. When I found out that she was debuting the first book in her French Bistro mystery series, I counted down the days until I could read it. The evening A DEADLY ÉCLAIR hit my Kindle, I poured myself a glass of wine and settled in to immerse myself in Napa Valley and get to know Mimi Rousseau. The author has created a lovely location for Mimi to own and run Bistro Rousseau and Maison Rousseau, the inn on her property in the northern part of the famous wine country. While the town is fictional, the area is real and I enjoyed the bits and pieces of history about the region woven into the story. Mimi is a likeable character who is struggling to overcome doubts about her ability to run her business along with being a self-taught chef instead of a classically trained chef. However, she is surrounded by supportive, talented people who she can rely on, especially her benefactor and mentor, Bryan Baker. If it wasn’t for Bryan backing her business, she never would have been able to open or stay in business. Not only did he financially back her new venture, he is emotionally supportive of Mimi, something she needs. Bryan is known for his motivational sayings and I enjoyed some that he shares with Mimi: “Big risks reap big rewards;” “Life’s too short to wait for anything.” It gives a screenshot into the man’s mind and how he lives his life. Unfortunately, Bryan’s life is cut short in the early morning hours, right before his niece’s wedding, which was being held at Maison Rousseau… with one of Mimi’s eclairs stuffed into his mouth. Mimi is devastated at the loss of her mentor but even more so when she becomes the number one suspect in the murder investigation. As the story unfolds and as Mimi starts looking into who could have wanted her mentor dead, numerous suspects come to light. There were plenty of twists and turns to the plot and all the while Bistro Rousseau kept guests well fed with delicious food that had my mouth watering. This charming new series will have me waiting on pins and needles until the next release! With all the mentions of delectable dishes and desserts throughout the book, I was quite happy to see that Daryl has included numerous recipes at the back of the book. They all sound fabulous and I’ll have a hard time narrowing down what to try out first! I was provided an advance copy with the hopes I would review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Supporting characters, some a little quirky, add richness and depth. Through the fictional setting of Nouvelle Vie, as well as the bistro and inn, the sights and smells of Napa Valley felt so very real. A Deadly Éclair has a delightful traditional cozy feel. As you would expect from a bistro series, food plays an important part, but descriptions don’t slow the pace down – they only make me hungry! Several appealing recipes are included at the end, introduced by little notes from Mimi and Chef C that make them more personal. They don’t appear to be all that difficult and I plan on trying one or two. I enjoyed Ms. Gerber’s writing style and all the twists & turns involving the suspects. Readers will be easily drawn to Mimi. It was fun to follow her logical and methodical questioning of the suspects as background info was revealed little by little. She also employed one of my favorite techniques – listing suspects and motives on a blackboard – which helped me keep things straight. And the chemistry between Mimi and Nash added just the right touch of romance, with lots of room for development. A Deadly Éclair is a clean, enjoyable read. Mimi, as well as her family and friends, are strong, appealing characters, and I look forward to seeing them grow through the series. The only negative for me is the surprising mention of the political leanings of a couple of secondary characters toward the end of the story, something that I want the books I read to be free of. Recommended. I was provided a free copy of this book through The Review Crew and Great Escapes Tours. The opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

A Deadly Éclair's main character, Mimi Rousseau, captured my interest from the start. As she's realizing her dream of being the owner-operator of a bistro and inn, I found her easy to root for. The dynamic of the relationship between Mimi and her childhood best friend, Jorianne (Jo) James, is delightful. Another character I really cared for is Mimi's benefactor and mentor, Bryan Baker. I was dismayed that he was the murder victim. I adored the story, told from the POV of Mimi. The gorgeous cover A Deadly Éclair's main character, Mimi Rousseau, captured my interest from the start. Daryl Wood Gerber has set her new series in a prime location, a small enclave in Napa Valley amidst vineyards and upscale shops. Protagonist Mimi Rousseau owns, not only a restaurant, but an inn, both easily providing ample prospects for suspects and murders, as well as wonderful recipes. Themes of loss and trust are explored in this mystery. While many of the suspects are overdramatic in their reactions to Mimi, the core cast is stable with interesting aspects that I hope will be explored and developed in future installments. A DEADLY ECLAIR serves up a delicious blend of characters, setting, and mystery in the first French Bistro Mystery. **I voluntarily reviewed this ARC** A great start to a new series. It had all the typical cozy elements - a beautiful setting, interesting characters, and a good mystery. The reveal was a bit of a surprise. One thing that I really liked was that it was written in a way that made the French food easier to understand.
