Hands Off My Food!: How Government and Industry Have Corrupted Our Food and Easy Ways to Fight Back

Availability: Ready to download

Americans have stopped being watchdogs over their own food supply. Roughly 100 years ago, with the birth of the FDA, we handed that responsibility over to the government and the food industry. They, in turn, have fundamentally transformed our food supply and it's making us sick, including our children. Not only are we losing our health to food related illnesses like cancer Americans have stopped being watchdogs over their own food supply. Roughly 100 years ago, with the birth of the FDA, we handed that responsibility over to the government and the food industry. They, in turn, have fundamentally transformed our food supply and it's making us sick, including our children. Not only are we losing our health to food related illnesses like cancer and heart disease, we are losing our freedom. Did you know that government and the food industry have already chosen your dinner for you? In fact, the government nudges you to pick the foods they want you to eat. They've been doing it your whole life. In Hands Off My Food! Dr. McCullough, a Ph.D. in Nutrition from the University of California at Davis, walks you through the truth behind what's currently in our food and how it got there. You may be surprised to learn that our food system is not designed to protect our long-term health. Both the food industry and the government have played a major role in the demise of our food supply, but they are not the root of the problem. Dr. McCullough reveals who is ultimately responsible for the adulteration of our food and how each of us has the power to restore the integrity of the food we eat by taking back our consent. Together we can reclaim our voice by becoming the watchdogs we were meant to be. It's easier than you might think!

This book is the first I've heard of that approaches our food supply concerns from a small-government perspective. It's the first book about food that I've seen that didn't just call for better regulation from government, and actually tells people how they can fix their food supply. Dr. McCullough is a talented writer who does not let her science background get in the way of her delivering an entertaining book. It's the first book about food that I've seen that didn't just call for better regulation from government, and actually tells people how they can fix their food supply. Dr. McCullough is a talented writer who does not let her science background get in the way of her delivering an entertaining book. This is an easy and accessible read that will open your eyes to the regulatory failings of the FDA in the US. Anyone who can make a book that regularly uses the phrase 'recombinant bovine growth hormone' readable and understandable clearly has a gift. The book does dig into the revolving door between huge agra-businesses and the regulatory agencies. Without that knowledge, many of the regulatory decisions made by the FDA and other agencies are entirely illogical; but knowing the incentives of the people who make those decisions (hint: it's not consumer safety) snaps the picture into sharp relief. And it's not pretty. Dr. McCullough doesn't issue a series of complaints and ask someone else to solve the problem. She points out the problems, describes solutions (vote with your wallet- and she's right), and even has special mentions of successful outcomes using the tactics she outlines. All Americans should read this book, since we all eat food in America. You may be horrified by the food additives and the corruption in equal parts, but there is a path for you to follow to food safety, and that is more than Upton Sinclair gave people in The Jungle.

Everyone should read this book The information in this book is astonishing. I learned a great deal and realized that I had many incorrect assumptions about the safety of our food, the GRAS list, and the role of the FDA. Truly everyone should read this book!

This book is empowering. It doesn't drone on and on about the problem and then leave you feeling overwhelmed and helpless. It tells you the problem - backed by nearly 50 pages of references. But, it also offers SIMPLE solutions that anyone can do while at the grocery store, eating out, or cooking at home. I love her uplifting story of how she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (caused by food) but was able to reverse it! Also, I like how the book doesn't just focus on chemicals in our food This book is empowering. It doesn't drone on and on about the problem and then leave you feeling overwhelmed and helpless. I love her uplifting story of how she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (caused by food) but was able to reverse it! Also, I like how the book doesn't just focus on chemicals in our food. It also talks about how our tax dollars are used to make unhealthy food cheap and abundant. And, how the food guide pyramid has changed our perception of food, which is stealing our freedom and making us sick. My favorite part of the book is how she doesn't try to convince you that what you are eating is bad for you or that you shouldn't eat processed foods, GMOs, growth hormones, etc. She is not placing judgement. Instead, she is encouraging all of us to figure out our own core principles and then "consciously speak with your dollars." In other words, know what you are saying with your dollars; know what and who you are supporting. This book is eye-opening and it's easy to read. She took complex topics and made them both easy to understand and interesting. I love her conversational style. It's unique and refreshing. A must read!
